I've been toying with the idea of making some poker chip trays and trying to sell them on etsy. Something similar to the below drawing, likely without the lid. Maybe even "reversable" if you know what I mean: you put chips in one tray and then stack another on top.

I'm curious if you guys think something like this would sell better, worse, or no different if I made them smaller?

My idea being these would not be for storage as much as for doling out chips for a tournament. A person pays and you hand 'em a cool wooden block of chips. And, as for most tourneys I play in, you would definitely NOT need 5 rows of chips. I'm thinking 3?

Yeah, it's not a million dollar idea... I'm just kinda looking to push myself to do some more wood working. The saw was kinda holding me back and that's been solved (hopefully, haven't put it together yet). If I have a goal, and the possibility of making money, that will help.

I think you could probably sell some of these but it wouldn't become a major revenue stream. You'd probably get more business if you could customize the size and capacity to some extent. There would probably be interest in the chip community for both the standard 100 chip rack (esp if they are stackable) as well as smaller racks for tourney play with a specific number of chips (starting buy in) in them. I like the idea!

Guy who hosts the game I go to just made similar trays with a 3d printer that hold the starting stack and on the bottom it holds a card that is your seat/table. so as you walk in you grab your stack of chips and its your seat as well. Rather nice idea.

I have no illusions that it would make me millions... Just looking to do something fun and make a little money off it. If it pays for some tools then I'd be happy...

Customizing it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Once I get a system for slapping 'em together I could make a small version with 2 or 3 slots for starting chips and then another for 100 stacks. Post 'em both and see who bites. Much of what I see on Etsy is "made to order" in that they aren't making a bunch of shit and stocking it to sell immediately. You tell 'em what you want and they produce it then. Many of them say they won't ship for 2 or more weeks.

Not a bad idea either!
