Hurricane Victims Donation Plan
King George (another poker player in a poker discussion forum) got me thinking with his post regarding the hurricane victims in New Orleans and outlying areas. And again, while watching the news this evening, it got me thinking further about when I lived in Los Angeles and the 6.7 (Mw) Northridge quake hit in 1994 and devastated the area with major destruction.
That brought me to current and I was able to reflect where I was at one point in my life and being effected by something as major as an earthquake, and in comparison, equally devastating, the hurricane and flooding in New Orleans and the surrounding areas and how peoples lives are turned completely upside down in the blink of an eye.
I am fortunate enough and very blessed to have what I have today, and for that I am grateful. I know there are others that have far more, and I also realize on the same token, that I am fortunate enough to have things that perhaps other don’t. One thing I have right now is my health, a house to live in, a car to drive, clothes to wear, my personal belongings which create the daily space I live in, many things of which others affected by the hurricane simply don’t have. Simple things that we often can take for granted, such as an internet connection, heat or air conditioning, running water, plumbing, electricity. Such is not the case for thousands and thousands of people in the hurricanes path. My prayers, positive thoughts, good juju, postulates, and hopes are of course with them.
While sitting in the garage watching the news, King George and his post in the forum got me thinking, and here is what I came up with. This is simply my self motivation to do something more than just send good thoughts and prayers for those in need and stuck in this unfortunate time of need.
Here is the program I’m going to pull together for the next 30 days which will turn out to be the entire month of September. I will document each step and track my progress for a running tally, and then a month end total for this cause. Anyone who gives donations will be recognized in the donations to the hurricane victims. Currently, I’m thinking that I’ll make my donations to the Red Cross.
I will solicit donations and rally for others to do something extra in their own way, or simply to donate to the cause that I am on for the next month. I'm hoping that those that play in our poker games, and are in the BYOC group will take the opportunity to generously extend what they can for this cause, in what ever form that is.
2.5% of my earned wages will be donated to the hurricane victims.
50% of my home poker game winnings will be donated to the hurricane victims. I’ll host or attend somewhere between 3 and 8 games in the next month.
100% of any additional donations which I rally for at a poker game will be donated to the hurricane victims.
50% of my casino and card room winnings will be donated to the hurricane victims. I’ll play in anywhere from 4 to 12 sessions in card rooms and casinos in the next month.
100% of any cash that I receive for my birthday (in the month of September) will be donated to the hurricane victims.
50% of the profits from anything I sell on ebay will be donated to the hurricane victims. I’ve got about 50 or 60 items that need to be listed, and this is all the more reason to get them listed.
100% of the donations that are made through my web site via PayPal and the poker page donations link will be forwarded to the hurricane victims.
I’m also going to go through and clean my closet out with all the clothes I don’t wear anymore. My wife has been on me to do this for some time, and here, again, is a perfect opportunity to make a chore into a great cause.
I welcome anyone else in their help for this cause, and promote others to do the same.
