need suggestions for staining concrete

well, its been a year and half since we moved in and i'm ready to tackle my walkout basement man cave "renovation."

my kids want a pool table for christmas. problem is we have 500 feet of 30 year old linoleum tile in the basement.




i told the kids we would have to re-do the basement floors before we got a pool table. so they got to working on removing the tiles. the tile are coming up easy enough, but leaving lots of adhesive behind, so i am making plans for adhesive removal and concrete cleaning.

the ultimate goal is to stain the concrete since it is in relatively good condition. i've never stained concrete, but im watching lots of videos on how to do it. My understanding is that it is a multi-step process- etching, staining, neutralizing, polishing, sealing....

Can anyone recommend a quality product or brand for concrete staining, or have any tips, tricks or recommendations?

hopefully the tile will be up by this weekend, and adhesive removed by next weekend.

no clue how to stain concrete, but have you given any thought to a faux wood looking laminate down?

We put this stuff down a few years and couldn't be happier.

odds are there's a post about it somewhere in these parts.

The tiles have adhesive that stick to each other. Once you get the first later or so done, you can knock out that space pretty quickly. I'd recommend rolling the tile down, as things tend to lift up a bit with temp changes in the low traffic areas. easy to cut as needed with a standard utility knife.

Thanks for the suggestion. With it being a basement floor with the washer, dryer, a bathroom, a/c drain and hot water heater, my luck is that I will inevitably have to deal with a flooded basement situation. I replaced 1700 ft of engineered wood flooring in our previous house and had to deal with replacing water damaged areas near exterior doors and water prone areas.

I’ve always wanted to at least try to stain concrete and if it doesn’t turn out I can always lay ceramic tile as a fall back plan.

My spousal unit does want to pull up the carpet in the living room, which I am sure will be replaced with engineered, laminate, or faux wood ceramic tile.

Hope to have test if the tile removed by tomorrow night. Then on to adhesive removal and concrete cleaning...

Update-12/23/18

So, took about two and half weeks to pull the tile, grind the adhesive residue, clean the concrete, apply two coats stain and one coat of sealer.

Wife is not exactly impressed with it, but we gonna give it a while to grow on her. I’ve convinced her that once we get some area rugs down, the least attractive areas will be covered with furniture and the rugs. If we absolutely can’t live with it, we can always tile the floor later on.

In the meantime, we bought the kids a pool table for Christmas, but it won’t be delivered until 1/2/19.





I was digging the color when the concrete was wet, but it dries to a dull chalky look.

Still have a few more racks to mount and some wildlife themed jigsaw puzzles to frame and hang.

Decided to go ahead and wax the floor to see if it improved the look of the stain



Spousal unit says it looks a lot better and is satisfied with the finished product.

Thankfully I can delay tiling it for a few years...

Pool table finally came in. It really ties the room together.

Spousal unit pleased with the stained concrete. Got a few more racks to put on the wall and a couple prints and I should be done for a while.
