Default Reupholstering my poker table

I'm attempting to refinish a poker table that I have been having for a while.

Here is a pic of the table in its former glory:

Since then the table has taken a beating from moving around. Vinyl is ripped in several spots and the playing surface has seen better days.

I plan to reupholster it with the following items from YAT:

Volara 1/4" Closed Cell Foam
65 lb. HD Rail Foam
"Blackbery" Casino Suited Speed Cloth
Symphony Vintage "Coal Black" Vinyl

Upon inspection of the rail after removal, I have noticed that the plywood used for the rail is really thin. It looks to be small sections of 1/4" plywood.

Does the plywood thickness affect the overall look and feel of the rail?

Would I be better off cutting out a new rail from thicker plywood to achieve a better looking and more comfortable rail?

Maybe it's just me but I feel that even with 3/4" ply in my rails they flex a substantial bit. I'd bet 1/4" flexes a LOT.

My choice without actually feeling the rail and it's flex is that I would recut the rail out of 3/4" ply.

I'm with mike but I'd also check if the table is flexing as well: beefing up the rail won't help if the table itself is too thin. You might be better off with a support sheet for the table as a whole to prevent substantial flex.
