I'm not fortunate enough to have a basement or a dedicated room specifically designed for a home theater. However, the house we bought is centered around the kitchen and family room which is a big plus for us when we bought the house.

I have recently purchased a 52" Samsung LCD and am looking to build a built-in wall unit around the TV. I have a large alcove on the entertainment wall that is the front of the garage. It's 10' long, 9' tall and 1.5' deep. I'll dig up the floor plans or draw them up so that you all can get an idea of what I'm up against. Maybe I'll snap a picture so you can see my ghetto-rigged setup right now.

We have an idea as to the style we want, but I have a few questions.

How much room do I need around the TV? I'd like to keep it as narrow as possible. It seems to produce a good amount of heat.
Would you consider wall mounting the TV on an extendable mount? I have a toddler at home and it would be nice to push the TV into the wall unit to keep her away from pawing it.
We want to attach this to the wall so it's built-in and not free-standing. I have no idea how I'm going to wire my A/V equipment. I also need to think about the future here as well.
I'm also concerned about the heat for all the A/V equipment, especially for the future upgrades. The wall unit will be all open shelves, but still a concern as the 5.1 HTIB Onkyo I have now turns off automatically when it overheats so much so that we keep the door open when it's on.
Wiring this room for 7.1 channel sound leaves a lot up for imagination. One side of the room faces the entire kitchen/dining room area, so there is no real good place for the side speakers unless I do a ceiling install.

Here's the floor plans if it helps.

Some crappy photos (http://www.oakcreekrealestate.net/renestate/show_listing.php?record=133&page=16&search_type=&search_value=) of a house for sale with same floor plan. Doesn't show the alcove area very well.

Since you plan on open shelving above/below/on either side you could always vent the back some by not having the side panels go all the way back against the wall, just in the area around the TV. Small fans could also be placed back there to force the heat out and draw cool air in....computer style.
