View Full Version : Theater component location question
Allright, almost done with the framing in the basement, and we are looking for the best location to house the components for the theater. We don't have that great of spots to choose from, as there is a shortage of space.
Option 1 is in the closet under the stairs. This closet is not that large, as it's under the stairs. We also would not have direct line of sight, as it would be behind us.
Option 2 would be in the laundry room / utility room front corner. It would be adjacent to the theater room, so the front of the components would face in towards us. I would make the housing higher off the ground, in case of a small basement flood (which shouldn't happen as it's a ground level split). There would be framing all the way around it inside the laundry room with a cabinet door access for the back of the components. On top of the framing we would put counter top to match the sink (which will be 4' off to the left of this housing).
I prefer option 2 - but am concerned about the extra humidity from the laundry room - and since it's about 4' from a sink - I want to make sure nothing happens to the components. We will have a fan built in to the side drawing air from the hall to cool off the units as they heat up, so that's not an issue.
Anyhow - thoughts?

Option 2 or get some infared extenders like these...

Note: I'm not promoting this brand, as I know nothing of it, but I'm in the same boat as you are...just looking for options and this is something I've been looking into.

Harmony 890 universal RF remote is $240 new or $180 refurbished from amazon and would address your line of sight problem.

Play it safe (NOT near water/humidity) and go with a RF/IR/BT extender.
Heat & humidity are NOT friends of this type of equipment. Keep 'em dry & cool, if at all possible, even if you have to install a few extra cable runs, or use a remote extender or two.
Just my $0.02.
I don't have a problem with the extra runs of cable, and I'd prefer to have them out of sight. I just don't like how much room they will take up in the already small closet. We don't have much storage space as it is. Wifey works with either - I guess I'll be running my wiring to the closet and figuring out how to make them up high and out of the way.
Thanks guys for the input!

I think I'm losing my mind. I was working on the room today, looked over the 2 locations and realized how flippen close to the laundry sink / tub the stuff would be. Ya, I'm getting old :(

As mentioned in my other response in one of your other dozen threads ;) about your project, I highly recommend the IR repeater approach. Stick your av equipment out of the way, in a closet or some other room.
I have the Buffalo Electronics repeater. Mounts in a single gang box and has not much more than a pinhole in the middle of it. It can handle 4 dual IR flashers at the equipment rack, so up to 8 different devices can be controlled.
ir repeater (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=182-315)
Mount it up near the ceiling above the tv. Then you don't have to worry about where you're aiming the remote. You just aim at the tv.

I was gonna mention how you don't need to post in all of them.
Hey, they are all separate issues, people need references don't they :(
Ya, I put the stuff away in the closet - and will be getting a different remote, or a IR repeater. Wifey and I went over all of it - she's on board. Shit, I'm insulated and ready for sheetrock - where were you for the past few weeks?

yeah, I've been pretty busy the past few months at work. I've been checking in on the offtopics a few times a week, but other than that haven't spent much time in the deeper recesses of this or any of my other haunts.
I guess it's also too late to suggest avsforum.com. More posts than you can possibly read in a month about all this stuff.

Been there a little bit - it's too much information to digest with the time I have and the time I want to get my project done. Figured there were people here who have more knowledge than I, or who have been through this before.
I think we are gonna do the Harmony 890 remote, for what it's worth.
Oh - you've been missed, btw.
