Those of you that have or have had DirecTV, does the receiver require a phone line connection?

No.

I haven't checked in awhile, but as far as I know, it still requires a phone connection for set up, but after that no. You do lose some functionality like not being able to order ppv with the remote, but otherwise, it will work fine. Wyatt, has it changed in the last year or so? It's possible.

they want you to have a phone line connected, they will even run one for you as part of the installation. my hd dvr has an ethernet port on the back, I think this trumps the phone line. It will function without one plugged in but you might have to have one for the install itself

I won't / will not / and have never plugged a phone line or provided an internet (Etherwebs) connection to any of my DVR / Direct TV boxes.

It gets updates just from DTV fine. I don't do PPV, so I have no idea of those two are tied to one another.

If they tell you it's needed, they are lying.

I have my wireless router in my enertainment stand so I went ahead and connected it too it. We do occasionally do the PPV and I think you need it connected to buy with the remote otherwise you have to log onto the web. One thing you do get from the ethernet connection is on demand "like" programming. I say like b/c it just downloads it to your dvr. I dont know if you can watch it while it downloads or not. the only one I have done was for the kids and did not atempt to watch it til it was done.

Because I'm paying for them to deliver me content. Not the other way around.
I decide what comes in my house, and what goes out of it.

Tell me exactly when, why and what information you exchange with the device when you call it, and I'm open to the discussion. Otherwise, don't call me.

We never had our phone lined hooked up until recently. About a year ago, I had some buddies over for poker and we orderd a PPV boxing match with the remote. Well, months went by and I was never billed for it. We eventually moved to a new house and hooked up the DirecTV boxes at the new house. I read in the manual that if you have a phone line hooked up you can get callerID on your TV. So, I hooked it up. When I got my next bill, the PPV boxing match was billed to me. I called DTV up and they explained that the received holds the PPV information until you hook the phone line up. It seems that you can order as much PPV as you want without the phone line and you won't get billed until you hook it up. The guy on the phone told me, that people have sold their boxes to someone else who plugged in a phone line and got charged. This was only a few months ago, so I would assume this is the way it is. I haven't ordered any PPV since, so don't take my word for it.

I've had DTV for 6 months, never had any phone lines going in or out of the box.

fuck me if this isn't true. I put the cat5 in <a month ago. Doing bills now open up the dtv bill and UFC88 from sept is on there. I am guessing this would only work til you cancel dtv. seeing as all the new equiptment is leased they will get you in the end when you turn in your box, but free ppv is tempting.
