View Full Version : Finishing Basement - Part Mancave *** UPDATED 3/9 ***
The house I built was to be a spec house, but we decided to move into it 7 months ago (better suited for our daughter). It's a split entry, with about 1150 square feet on the top floor (main area) and about 500 unfinished in the lower section (basement). I am in the process of finishing off the basement (which has a laundry room / bathroom, media area and play area for our daughter). I have framed the laundry room, put up most of the sheetrock and did the corner shower yesterday. I will get pics this evening when I get home, as I left the camera at work over the weekend. I have some framing to do in the media and play area, along with electrical and insulation before sheetrock.
At my last house, I used roofing felt on the side walls of the living area for my tv room, which acted as a sound insulator (and worked quite well), so I will be doing this again along the laundry room / bath room.
Just thought I would make a thread to show progress as it goes!

Are you done yet?
Are you done yet?
How the hell can I be done - I haven't even started the wiring - lighting - misc crap for the theater section. I'm doing some research and questions with the wifey whether we are doing projection or flat screen. Totally different wiring for either - and I don't want to do 1 and have her tell me the other. Plus, I just got done installing the shower in the laundry room / bath room on Sunday - still have some shit to do in there before I can paint, trim, finish that area off. Lots and lots of work to do - and yet so little time.
It's been 2 days - some of us have a place of employment to go to each day during the week.
Quit busting my balls, prick.

good grief Oz.....maybe you ought to sub it out so it gets done more quickly and done right!
Fuck all y'all! Assholes.
I finally took pictures last night when I got home - now just need to get them on the hosting site. I did put some of the can lights in last night, after I pulled some ductwork down that was in the way. I have too many thoughts about what I want to do - just need to make up my mind. I wish the size of the room was bigger - I'd put a bar in there as well.

Easy trigger.
It's not like you gotta be a bitch about it.
Remember, I got your fucking phone number... and I'll be AWAKE and DRUNK at 3AM with my phone in my hand looking for someone to call 14 times in a row.....

Someone has PMS. Probably why they havent finished their work yet.
I'm done (for what I was doing last night) :D
And yes - you do have my phone number Q --- feel free to call me anytime. I might need some help with some things you could be of use. My phones on by my bed at night --- drunk dials would be fun (note: make sure to get recorder for PMC drunk dial threads)
Allright - here's the pics of what I'm working with.
Bathroom / Laundry - shower in, still needs caulked and finished plumbing once room is done:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/OzzmysterG/P1030217.jpg
Theater Area - I was given a whole bunch of 6' 2x4s - and since the wall isn't structural I used them there instead of getting full length studs.

Zoe's area to play in when it's all complete and the shit finds someplace else to be stored:

From the side of the house / room looking back toward the garage / stairs heading up

So, what's left to do?
1) Finish framing in theater part of room
2) Wiring and hardware (lights, outlets, switches, theater stuff)
3) Insulate ceiling and walls
4) Soundproof laundry room wall
5) Sheetrock / Tape / Texture
6) Paint
7) Trim & Doors
8) Carpet
9) Hardware
10) Enjoy!!!!

It's going in the garage as soon as I'm at that stage (hopefully tomorrow!)
We have so much crap - and not much room for it. Looking to get rid of is this spring / summer when the wifey's not around

You should get some help with that. Maybe some baseball players who arent doing a whole lot right now.
UPDATE
I spent all weekend finishing off the framing, electrical and AV wiring, insulating and sound proofing the wall.
I went with 4 Cat5 wires, 2 coax and some electrical conduit for future from the AV closet to the TV area. I also got a flat screen mounting bracket for my tv and made sure my mounting area was just right, with the proper lagging surface area for support.

I was half temped to put the wiring into the new breakers - but figured since a buddy of mine was coming to do it for free I'd just wait rather than risk the chance of death.

Insulation in the walls and ready for soundproofing and sheetrock. The house has a vapor barrier already, so need for a 2nd barrier for about 95% of the insulation. There are a few places that I need to put another layer on where I removed it for access.

didn't you have to float those walls? It doesn't look like structural subfloor....

No, actually the center wall is a load bearing wall with the proper footings underneath, hence the 2x6 construction. No need to float the wall.

maybe code is different from where I am at, but in Colorado....all walls needs to be floated if you have slab on grade (not if you have structural subfloor). I would hate to see that slab heave 1/2" and wreck your walls. Still looks good though :D

I actually had to look up what floating the walls was. We don't have any code here that states one way or another. In fact, most (I'd almost say 100%) of the houses here don't have floated walls at all - and the houses are typically built on basements. Never seen it around here.
I will check into that code here.
And - thanks!

Lookin nice. I could never make progress that fast unless I contracted it out (which I do more and more now that I'm older and lazier).
That tv mount area looks like it could support about anything.
It's Friday and I spent the past 4 nights (1 night was only 30 minutes :) ) spending about 1.5 - 2 hours hanging the lid. Last night I completed that task - and now it's on to the walls. It's pretty damn hard doing the ceiling alone - and the wall tops aren't that easy either - but hopefully I'll be pretty close to being done with the rock tomorrow. Pics coming when I'm done and ready to start mudding and taping.
Sheet rock is all hung and ready for tape texture and paint

Fuck the snow! We got 86" in 3 weeks - and it's been almost 2 months since we've seen it since, but we still have a lot and it's not going anywhere fast  Wish the sun would come out.
As for the floor - you should see it now - I've been taping / mudding and I have 1 coat left to finish this weekend and then it's the texture.
All I can say is "sanding sucks ass"
Should have pics up Monday. Hope they are of a textured and primed surface - that would be a great weekend! Then I could paint at night during the week - and put the trim up next weekend!
*** UPDATE 2/17 ***
First off - I hate mudding and taping. Well, not the actual mudding and taping - but the damn sanding! I have about 2 pounds of the sheetrock dust in my body from the past week of doing all this.
But I can proudly say that I am completed through that stage of the process! no more mudding, taping, sanding until I do the laundry room (which should be relatively easy) next month.
So, here are a few pics - with a lot of dust still in the air.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/OzzmysterG/P1030405.jpg
The ceiling was the most fun - but the biggest pain in the ass. I don't mind the stomping - but holding the damn hopper over your head full of mud is not that entertaining!

Next steps:
Tonight - Clean up mess and prime all walls / ceiling
Wednesday - Paint ceiling white
Thursday - Paint walls with whatever color wifey wants

hey Oz.....not my favorite thing to do either...I'd much rather build the wall, than do the finish work.
Whatcha doing with the ledge under the window that is drywalled? gonna cover it with wood and make a shelf or something?

At the moment we are going to leave it sheetrock. Don't plan on doing much - maybe putting pictures or something on there - but that will be wifeys job (not really much I am allowed to do when it comes to decorating).
But, good news is I have completed the primer and am ready to start painting tonight.
Got home from work early last night - so I decided to start painting the walls with the extra 30 minutes I gained!
Tonight I'm going to be hitting all the corners and under the white ceiling in the one area, paint the inside of the windows and roll a 2nd coat on. When I poured the brown paint into the container - it looked just like melted hersheys chocolate bars and I was getting excited (chocoholic).
All trim will be white baseboard and window trim.
Anyway - here's the pics from last night:
Theater area has brown ceiling as well as walls.

you forgot to paint in the inside corners.
you forgot to paint in the inside corners.
Shit, I knew I was forgetting something.
Oh well - guess I'll be going for a new look!
All painted - all cleaned up. Doors coming in by Thursday, should be up along with trim on Saturday. TV wall hanger is in place, speakers will be cut into the wall and painted by Saturday as well.
I was suppose to have my doors delivered on Friday so I could do my trim and paint - but they screwed up and put them on will call instead of delivery. I called and asked what happened - and they got them to the house today. I now can get the doors in and the trim done before carpet, which should be in about two weeks.
Saturday, since we didn't have the doors, the wifey decided she wanted me to put the tv, speakers and chairs in there to see what it would look like. While I was at it, and since the equipment was on the wall, I decided to hook up the DVD player and stereo to check out the sound. Oh my, what a great sound! I'm so looking forward to having everything done soon.
Anyhow, here are a couple pics of the setup without the trim and without the speakers being painted.
Quads - you'll notice the corners were finally painted as well. Thanks for pointing that out to me :D

Man you got me just dying to start mine. Looks great, what's going on the floors?
Spent the weekend putting the doors in, along with most of the trim. I didn't have 2 headers for the doors or the trim for the windows, so I couldn't finish everything. I was able to get all the baseboard done, along with the door jams, so I am 'ready' for the carpet when that time comes. I will hopefully be getting the 2 headers and window trim in, in the next couple of days (HD and Lowes does not carry the size I need).
Anyhow - here's an update of the pics --- I still need to fill the nail holes and paint - but that will come after the other 4 pieces of trim are in.
Straight ahead is the garage door. I put in the doors to the left (stairway storage) and the right (laundry / bath room) and the base.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/OzzmysterG/P1030518.jpg
Wifey wanted a glass door entering from the hall to the 'theater' and Zoe's room. I like how it doesn't break up the room as much as a traditional door would.

Still need to finish off all the electrical trim, paint the speakers and electrical panel, and finish trim for the lights. Carpet is coming soon!
