When I went up to visit my dad at Christmas, I borrowed my mom's recipes (dad doesn't cook anyway) and I'm now looking for a good way to make electronic copies of them. I've got 4 real small binders that each have about 50-70 recipes in them. Granted that there are only 10-20 total that I really want, but I'd rather copy all of them in case my palette changes down the road.

I might just go the cheap route and type them into Word but if someone knows a better way, I'm all ears.

My wife and I have this same problem. No easy way to it other than scanning them. We're talking about creating a database.

We've tried various ways to catalog them on computer, but come up with nothing so far that worked well.

You could try the system they have on www.Foodnetwork.com. You would still have to type it in but it's pretty easy to organize them.

I've got a buddy with a searchable type program that is very basic, but works very well.
I've sent him an email to ask where he got it or if he wrote it (he's a programmer by trade)

This works pretty well, but I just have them all in a big file on the pooter and just look through everything. I'm too lazy to keep this up.

the nice part about scanning is you have the original recipe in a relatives handwriting..that will mean something to you when they are gone.

I like the concept of organizing your recipes on your computer, but are you going to put your monitor on the kitchen counter to read said recipe?

I think there is something pretty cool about using the old hand me down recipes that are hand written, discolored and stained with food splatters. Food just seems to taste better from an old family recipe.

I just have two binders with plastic sleeves for all my recipes. This way i can still write notes on them and just pull out the one I want. With it in plastic I dont' ahve to worry about it getting scummy. I have several of them backed up on the computer so if I need a new copy or need to make a change/adjustment I can and just print a new one. Even once I get all my recipes in digital form I'll most likely still have a hard copy in the kitchen to use.

I talked to my buddy, it's a program he wrote in python and runs through google's app engine. So, it's not readily avail. to the public.
