Since I can't seem to get a response other than "try the search feature, noob" from those fuckers over at avforum.com what are your guys thoughts on the subject, specifically concerning projectors.
We've decided we are going the projector route but now I need to decide if it's worth paying double price for a 1080 model.
I understand you do lose a bit of picture quality with the larger screen but is it really worth it? I know it's going to better, that's not the question, is it worth it... that's the question.

I guess we would need to know some more information in order to help you make a decision, but ultimately, it is what you think looks good for your eyes.
Here are the questions:
1. Viewing distance
2. Screen size
3. Source material (HD Broadcasts, Bluray, etc)
4. Budget
5. Type of screen
IMO I would go ahead and go with a 1080p PJ. Most of them will be better in otherways outside of resolution.

Hey, should I build a table with, or without a racetrack?????
That's probably what you looked like over in the AV forums, had to be some funny shit. "Hey man, I'm Screw, don't you know who I am? Wait, I don't have shit for cred over here, never mind, I'll go back and ask the group of ass-clowns at PMC"

Yeah that pretty much how it went. I tried to disguise my ignorance/lack of credability, but I appearently failed.

1. viewing distance: approx. 15 ft.
2. screen size: 102"
3. source material: mostly sports and movies (no blu-ray yet), video games (xbox 360 & Wii) and some reg. tv (reg. and hi def.)
4. $2000.00-$3000.00
5. the best I can fit into the budget

I have the Sanyo z4. I sit anywhere from 8 to 20 feet away. It all depends if cash is that much of a factor. Ive had my 720 for 3.5 years and love it. The bulbs are still going strong. Blue ray looks amazign and so does the ps3, wii, 360, and hd football. Im a member over there at avsforum and theres a lot of jackasses over theere. You know the type, kids you used to beat the hell outta in hs and now they have a littel something on everyoen and wanna act like dickholes. Anyway, you cant go wrogn with either. DOnt start listen to too many people about tech specs and all that shit, itll just frustrate you. I listened to those people for 2 years and fianlyl said fuck it and jsut went nad pulled the trigger. You are going to be blown away, my 110 inch projector may not be able to compare to a 42 inch plasma, but i paid less and my picture is measured in FEET not inches. Bottom line iff ya got the cahs go 1080, if not then youll be happy with the 720. Hell when my bulbs go i may just get a cheap ass 720 again. Have you seen the prices on those things, under 800 bucks in some spots

None of those are broadcast in 1080p.

If you are looking at spending 2-3k and a short viewing distance for 102" screen I would def go with 1080p. Panasonic has a PJ that many are raving about in this price point. The main feature that this PJ has over others is the ability to store zoom points. This way you can get the most out of those 2.35:1 widescreen movies. and then shift back to 16:9 for your regular TV viewing.

Blu-ray is 1080p, but I think he was referring to things you currently own. The 360, depending on how you have it connected, can output 1080p (via HDMI or VGA). Your HD TV broadcasts will be either 720p or 1080i. I have heard about Dish and Direct TV starting to offer some 1080p services, but I am not sure of the quality of it or the availability.

I was. It basically comes down to a decision to future proof yourself or not.

That certainly does look like a nice PJ, but it may a bit too pricey (obviously wifey decides that) I'd like to put the whole thing together for $3000.00 max.
It looks like I can get a very good 780 PJ and a top quality screen in that range. Seems like if I try to go the 1080 route I'll need to include a blu-ray player and go for the middle of the road PJ and screen.
I suppose that's ok, I just want value. I'd hate to get top of the line 780 and screen home and set up and be dissapointed. Keep in mind we're going from 5 year old 65" projection tv.

That project can be had for ~2500. What kind of screen are you looking to get? You wouldn't have to get a bluray player right away, you may find that upscaled DVDs are acceptable to you. I think it might be a good idea to see if you can find someone that has a PJ to get a demo.

I think I might go for 720 since it is your first pj. This way it's not a huge investment if you don't like it, and you still get great performance if you do. You would see a difference with a 1080 pj, but as others mentioned currently only on bluray or select dish and directv downloads. But you can get into a decent 720p pj like the Panny Ax200 (<$1000) and the Mitsubishi HC 1600 ($650) and then upgrade in a couple years when the prices on 1080p come down. The one thing to be conscious of is that the DLP's aren't as adjustable as the LCD's, so you might end up moving your mount and wiring when you upgrade, which for a builder like you shouldn't be a problem, but you should be aware of it.
I also have to agree, AVS serves a purpose with all the traffic, but it's full of all the typical big forum problems, including dickheads and self perpetuating advice. Like, one guy says, I reviewed the "wonderkind super duper dickinator" and it's the best for the price range, much better than dickinators costing 5 times as much. Well, then 5 more people agree with him, even though they've only bought one dickinator in their lives, and suddenly, if you don't have that particular model, you're a clown because your colors don't pop, your blacks aren't as black and your penis is small. I will give them that there are some very knowledgeable people over there, but you have to have some decent knowledge yourself to figure out who knows their shit and who is just talking out their ass.

Well, I told wifey about the plan for the projector (720) and screen etc... sge say's "well since all we really do is watch movies down there (the basement) why not have the best picture, price out the 1080 PJ, new Blu-ray palyer w/ new speakers and amp, etc..."
So I've been doing some research but does anyone have one to reccomend?

So we skipped the projector and went with a Mitsubishi 73" DLP
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d142/Screwball100102/8886912_rb-1.jpg
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8886912&type=product&id=1215818957568
and a Bluray player. The picture is unrealistic.
We really wanted the PJ and screen but our basement has pretty a low ceiling (just around 7 feet) and with the depth of the projector coupled with the depth of the mountnting bracket, at 6' 4" I'd have been constantly banging my head.
Anyway, we're really happy with what we've got.
Thanks for the info guys.
P.S. I will never EVER deal with Best Buy again. Maybe the worst retail experience I've ever had.

Can you elaborate? I've had uneven dealings with them in the past but they are the best shop in town pricewise here, unless I go interwebz but then I get only boxes and no install/support.

Same thing I ran into, they are the only game in town, now that Tweeter is closed and Circuit City is in re-org.
I think it all boils down to accountability. 99% of the people I dealt with don't seem to care. When the issue crosses departments or - heaven forbid - stores, the issue is lost. Most of the folks have the "aint my job man" attitude.
That goes for corporate as well. The disconnects between all departments, big and small is vast.
Just overall very very difficult.
Just to be fair, they're are a few helpful people, but it's like they're hands a tied because they end up running into the same roadblocks.
Hope you have better luck than we did.
