Well, the wife's not too impressed with all this, but I sure as hell am....

Had a 26" CRT tv for the longest time. Won a poker tournament last month, won about $525. I was going to buy a Weber Smokey Mountain smoker, but I could not find one of the new models. So I bought an LCD tv...The wife was none too pleased that I spent my poker winnings, which she loved, on such an item. After much research and shit, I realized that I could only afford a
32" which may be small, but when I get the 50" later down the road, I can move this 32" tv into my bedroom.

So, I went all over, really unimpressed with Best Buy's customer service, ended up at Wal-Mart the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, bought a Sanyo. Got it home, it was great. Then on Friday morning I was shopping Walmart.com and saw they had a Sony Bravia for the same price. Into the virtual cart it goes. For the past week, I've just been waiting for it to ship to my store; the original email indicated that it would arrive 12/9-12/15. But, surprise, surprise, it arrives Thursday night. So, at 9:00 p.m., after all the kids are in bed, I box up the Sanyo, return it, get the cash, turn around and pick up the Sony Bravia, go home and hook it up. Wow! I didn't think there would be that much difference in the picture, but the Sony just kicks ass.

Earlier in the week, I called Direct TV and after some fighting, I got a free HD DVR. The technician will be here on Dec. 15 to hook up my HD. Holy f'n shit I can't wait. I mean, watching Survivor last night, the picture was just amazing, and it's not even in hi-def yet...Fuck I can't wait. As for the wife, she only mumbled, "Yeah, the picture's nice, but it seems kinda small," which I've heard many, many times before....

TP

Oh, one question about an S-video cable. What the fuck is it? And does it provide a better picture than the composite/component connectors? I know this may be irrelevant at the moment as my hd dvr will have an hdmi connector, but should I connect my dvd player via the s-video or component cables? Does it friggin' matter?

Yes it matters. Use component or hdmi for the best picture. And if you are tired of waiting for the directv guy and want to watch football all day today and tomorrow, hook an antenna up to that bad boy (rabbit ears will do) and watch it in its HD glory! Your wife will get that.

S Video is old tech, it split the video signal into separate black/white and color signals, I believe.

Component has a blue, red, yellow separation, and better quality.

HDMI is the best. Carries video and audio signal as well as a digital signal.

HDMI = component for now, no such thing as 1080p broadcast signal, not enough bandwidth. So components work just fine. Unless you got a blu-ray player, then go with the HDMI. Also, avoid Sony's Trumotion or cinemaview, whatever the hell it's called. It's used to get rid of blurring motion in films. It makes movies look like shit, more documentary that film look, my buddy swears by it, but I think it destroys to film quality and the immersion into fantasy that movies provide.

HDMI via pcmicrostore.com, can't go wrong. My DISH tells me they're outputting in 1080P, not sure if it's special buy channels or not.

As mentioned above, get out the old rabbit ears antenna and get OTA (over the air) HD, all locals and most importantly, NFL on the weekend.

Enjoy the great TV.

It might be upconverted in some way, but true 1080P is only found on Blu-Ray discs/players.

Your old dish is more than likely not receiving/relaying the HD broadcast, and as others have mentioned, hook up a pair of good old fashioned rabbit ears to the HD TV set, and be amazed. All local channels will now be in HD.

Yes CBC broadcasts in HD, CBCHD is the channel to be exact. As does TSN.
