View Full Version : Garage Door Opener
Anyone ever had a Craftsman garage door opener fail such that when you press the button, the opener clicks a couple times but doesn't move the door?
Freakin' light bulbs on it don't even work now, nothing seems to work but it does have power and makes clicking sounds like relays are closing or trying to close when any of the buttons are pushed.
Gettin tired of parking outside...
Maybe it's just time to put up a new one...

Not a Craftsman but mine is also a cheap opener. If it is just on the closing of the door, check the hole's where the light beem shoots across at the bottom of the door. I have had spiders build webs and sit in the holes so the light gets blocked and the door won't close because it thinks there is something in the way of the door. It will still open it just wont close.
My last Craftsman started doing what ever it wanted to. So you never knew if the door would stay closed while your gone. I replaced mine with

Definitely check that the sensors on either side of the door are aligned and that they have power. Mine did the exact same thing until I noticed that one of the sensor brackets had gotten bent (damned brother in law). It would click, and do nothing. Realigned the sensors and everything worked again.
Yep, I've had the spider web/spider thing too, I'll check the alignment on them. It's just weird that the door was going up at the time it died so it's like something shorted out. Maybe the door movement pushed one of the sensors out of alignment as the door moved up the rails.
I'll check it tonight...

I know you said you hear "clicks". Does the motor run and nothing moves? That happened to mine and i opened it up.. plastic gears inside were shredded.

One of mine overruns the stopping point about every 3 months - no idea why. the first time a door guy came out, after that I fix it myself.
when it overruns into the up position, it jams against the stopper bolt. Then does exactly as you're describing. check that to see if it's jammed up somewhere.
OK - checked the alignment on the sensors, alignment is good.
pie - I have not opened it up yet, but the motor does not seem to turn that I can tell, although I'm not standing next to it, the wall button is 10 or more feet away (I'll get up on a ladder with a remote tomorrow and see if I can hear spinning).
pizza - It doesn't seem jammed. I know the day it stopped it never made it up all the way so it could not have jammed into anything.
My future is looking like buying a new electronics board and trying that before just buying a whole new one.
Now, I gotta go eat something because your two call signs have made me hungry.... :)
OK, tried the wireless remotes - they do nothing, the opener apparently does not "see" them.
