I have an opportunity to sell my xbox 360 with the idea of getting a PS3 instead. I would get about $200 for the xbox, so I would need to fork out some cash to get the ps3. My primary purpose in getting a PS3 would be the blu ray player. Online gaming doesn't interest me, but gaming does. I was about to plop down $100 on a wireless adapter for the xbox but i think the PS3 has it built in.

You can by a new Xbox for $199. Is yours the 100gig version?

PS3 is a more powerful machine (and a BR player), but the library is not as big as the library available for XB360. Eventually, the programmers will learn to harness the PS3's full capabilities, and the games will blow away 360 games. MHO.

only the 20g but I am throwing in GTAIV and guitar hero. Thanks for the thoughts, pretty consistent with what I'm hearing.

If you can get your hands on a PS3, even for 200 bux out-of-pocket, I'd say GO FOR IT!

The newest PS3 packages have 160GB drives now, I think. It is cheaper to upgrade the HD with an off-the-shelf notebook HD, but...the extra space (over the standard 80GB models) is nice. [I have a 320GB drive in mine, and it works like a charm!]

And back to your original point...wired (ethernet) & wireless (802.11g) networking is built-in to the PS3. AND the blu-ray player. AND tons of other home theater goodies.

Do it. NOW!

EDIT: And get over HERE (http://www.perfectmancave.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8212) to make a claim at a FREE game!!!

Keep your 360.

If you're really only interested in a PS3 for its Blu ray capability I'd recommend just buying a stand alone player - the prices are dropping like crazy - you should be able to pick one up for $200 or less.

If you're interested in just gaming the 360's library blows away the PS3. With the much larger installed user base of the 360 developers are much more inclined to develop titles on the 360 and then port them to the PS3 or not at all. Thus the 360 version is usually better in terms of frame rate, etc. Case in point - Fallout 3. PS3 version has a lot of graphic bugs and frame rate issues.

I own both the 360 and PS3 so I can assure you I'm not some rabid pimple faced fanboy.

I don't really buy the 'once they harness the power of the cell processor' line. Developers have had 3 years to work on the cell and there's nothing on the PS3 that can't be done equally or better on the 360. The current gen is 3 years into its life cycle - it's likely that next generation of consoles will hit in two years or less if history repeats (game systems have come out approx. every 4-5 years since the 80s). So if/when developers learn to 'harness the cell' the next gen will already be on the horizon with better specs.

update!

I sold the PS3 and spent the money on Christmas presents. Low and behold, my wife buys me a PS3 for Christmas!

I didn't originally plan on it, but I turned the Mac into a media center and now I can stream anything on the computer to the tv downstairs: pics, slideshows, movies, music.

Blu-ray player, media center, free online gameplay, built in wifi, hdmi

it was definitely worth the upgrade, thanks for the advice guys!
