How many TVs can you run from a single subscription to the Dish or DirectTV?
Say I wanted 4 screens in my poker room, one on each wall - - am I looking at 4 different subscriptions? anybody know?

You pay by the receiver with Directv. Each account comes with one included receiver. You then pay $5 a month for each additional receiver. If you want the ability to have different programs on each tv, you need one receiver per tv.

all the same channel, you can split the signal without any substantial loss in viewing.

I have DirecTv, and when I tried to split the signal before the box it came up blank. I figured there was some loss of signal strength, and the box didn't like it.
I know on mine there are 4 outputs from the satellite.
Wait... you're saying split after the box, not before like I tried. My bad.

I assume by receiver you are talking about the "cable box" that the line runs into and then into the TV? While that is a necessity you also have to have the appropriate number of feeds from the satellite dish.

I'm no expert but I've not seen any dishes with more than 3 feeds on them limiting you to 3 different, simultaneous, shows on 3 different TVs.
I have not stayed at a Holiday Inn Express recently...

When you sign up for directv, they offer you up to 4 different rooms for free. So I would imagine that is the limit per dish, but could be wrong. They used a powered multiswitch to slpit the line which are pricey, so maybe more of those could get you more rooms per dish. However like Quads said to have each tv running something different they will all need their own receiver(box), if you want them all running the same thing then one box and a normal cable splitter on the output will get the job done. If these are all high def then you may need boxes for each again. YMMV worst case spend 15 mins on the phone with DTV. I just reread your question. With DTV you do not need separate subscriptions, you just pay $5 extra per month per box after the first one. Again there may be limitations as far as boxes per dish.

If you split before the receiver, then you need a switch. (about $20-40)
If you want to just show the same channel on multiple sets, then what Quads said

My ideal plan would be to have multiple TVs, some of which I would have always on the channel and some of which were available to be switched. When the plan crystallizes a bit more, I'll reveal it here.

When I had Dish, we had 2 TVs on the 1 receiver, each with separate controls. If I wanted to add another TV or 2, then we had to have another receiver (can't remember if we needed another dish though). We weren't ready at the time, and since changed to Cockcast. But you shouldn't have to have separate subscriptions.

If you have 4 HDTVs with HDMI, and and HD receiver with direct... Checkout skywalkercommunications.com and order an amplified 1x4 HDMI splitter. They will also have the cheap HDMI cables for you also.

Would that allow me to have 4 separate channels playing on the TVs?

If you want different content on different screens you will need a seperate source for each. The receivers only have one live out per unit. They may have two inputs for running your DVR while watching a second channel, but the out put feed is only broadcasting off a single tuner.

Direct TV has 4 recievers per dish. You need a receiver for each television you want the ability to view channels independently.
We have 4 DirecTV receivers in my house currently which feed to 5 TV's. The 4 receivers are in separate rooms. Each can view whatever it likes. I split off after the receiver in the office room to a 5th TV in the Garage. The garage TV will show whatever show is on in the office room in the house. But I also feed a signal from an old roof antenna on our house, so if the wifey is watching something stupid in the office while I'm in the garage, I can flip a switch and still get the basic antenna stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX). Which works great for me on Sunday's to make sure I can have on the football games in the garage.
You can have more than one satellite on your house though. My neighbor has it on his house. Not sure how much it costs though.
I think on Dish, you can run 2 TV's independently off of each receiver, which could allow up to 8 independent TV's. I don't have dish, so correct me if I'm wrong.

We currently have Dish and have four tv's hooked up, all can have different channels playing. It was said before, with Dish you can run two seperate tv's off of one receiver (playing different channels).............2 receivers = 4 tv's!

I'm pretty sure you can run more than 4 receivers off of one DirecTV dish. We have 3 DVRs in our house, each one takes 2 inputs. We can record 6 independant channels at once. The satellite only has 4 lines coming off of it, but directv has a powered splitter hooked up that takes in 4 lines and puts out 8. We can add another DVR or two standard receivers if needed.
