My wife obtained a nice pedestal sink for our bathroom. When our plumbing got replaced a few months back she had them haul away the old cabinet sink.

In looking in to installing the pedestal sink I found we should have a 2x4 installed between the wall studs to mount the sink to.

Short of ripping a hole in the new drywall to put in a 2x4 it, do I have any choices?

**Clearly I have zero experience in this area, so any explanations using laymans terms would be appreciated.

You are going to need that 2 x 4.

The only thing I can think of is to put a sheet of plywood in front of the drywall, attach the plywood to the studs and then the sink to the plywood. You would then have to finish the plywood so it looks nice. However, by the time you do that you could have just put in the 2 x 4.

Just take out a piece of drywall. Its way easier than you think. Definitely easier than trying to make a piece of plywood look good.

Tips:

find your studs and cut the drywall right from stud to stud..from just above the height of the sink all the way to the floor. Use a level, draw a plumb line at the middle of each stud, cut with an Olfa knife. You may need to go right to the corner and across two studs.
Attach your 2x4 (2x6 is even better..more material to attach to your studs)
now is when you can make any plumbing changes.
Re-attach your drywall.
Tape and sand. Always use more mud than you think....lots of sanding....then even more. Just put in 20 minutes each night for each coat
