On my first table, i used a water based poly that ended up coming out a bit "hazy" and not as smooth as I would like. I was thinking of going over it again by doing a very light sand, then another coat or two with a higher gloss water based poly. I had read somewhere that you can make the poly more "liquid" by cutting it 50/50 with mineral spirits, but i assumed that was regular poly, not water based.
Any ideas on how to do the same with water based? I thought maybe cutting with water, but am not sure. I am trying to get a very smooth surface.

I've never cut water based poly before. Check with someone like NASCAR Pete, or one of the hard core seasoned wood workers. Possibly a google search will turn some stuff up on it. Last resort, check the label and see if they recommend anything on it there.

They do not reccomend thinning of any kind to water based poly.

The waterborne poly I use is specifically made for spray finishing so I'm not sure it's relevant or not but it says you can thin it with water. Do this: try thinning a small test batch and applying it to a scrap piece to see what result U get. While that's drying email or call the manufacturer & see what they have to say. Be sure to ask if you should use distilled water or not for thining, just in case regional water characteristics might be a factor.

I thought water might do the trick, and will test it. I have a sprayer but applied the original coats with a foam brush. Maybe i will just get some stuff that i can spray.
