I started a table that is a spinoff of this but I'm putting my own thang into it:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/5553_24_02_08_10_35_13.jpg

The base, stretcher, rail and part of the sub-base have been cut out and was on my until my table saw died while cutting the support pcs for the sub-base. Here are the updated pics:

The stretcher is actually pine with red oak veneer.

Oak base and Pine rail cut out with router/jig:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/021.jpg

The Peds were an overstock item from another builder, great for the price but were a little short. I will be adding a little height to the sub-base to help lift the clearing height up a bit. The sub-base was cut with an awesome new Bosch jigsaw (talk about smooth):

UPDATE #1

Put together the sub base and oak veneer, first the top side:

now the bottom:

Building up the rail:

lining things up:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/liningupthepcs1.jpg

and cutting out the cup holder:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/cupholders1.jpg

I'm currently at initial mock up for installing the hardware. Final routing and sanding, then its a staining we will go.

Update #2

At mock up, used oak plugs for the playing surface.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/table3build2ndedit0041.jpg

Race track & cup holders w/two coats of bombay mahogony stain/poly in one with wet sanding (500 grit) after drying. added a third coat to help hide the ribs (not sanded at time of picture). Not a big fan of the two in one stuff but I got the affect I was looking for (though its far from perfect).

Finally the peds/table base with two coats but 2nd coat not sanded at time of picture.

I really wish I had the tools and a place to do woodworking.

The table looks excellent!! Thanks for the in-progress pictures

Thanks for the kind words...

The P.S. will be black unsuited speed cloth, (unless the person that had the original hard on for this table takes a viagra again, then it'll be a custom cloth in a firefighter theme.....sorted story). Picking out the stain tomorrow, but for now I'm leaning toward cherry.

Agreed. Makes it really easy to put a drawer in it for your chips, cards, and stuff.

First off, looks like you're doing some great work. Everything looks awesome so far. Just two things.

a) the piece with the routered edge and the cupholders is from a single piece of plywood. When the edge is routered, how do you plan to cover up the exposed layers of the plywood, or do you just plan on staining over it and keeping it as is?

b) are you using a pool table as a work bench?

A, Yeah its a single pc of ply. I'm hashing it out now, working with some scrap to get a good blend of an enamal paint and matching the stain color as best as I can to rid me of the ply ribs. Like I said I'm hashing this out. If anyone has any tips or suggestions to achieve this, I'm all ears.

3, Yeah I'm using the pool table as a work bench. A man card faux pa but with a good reason. I want to get rid of it, my wife won't budge even after the last youngin is off to college (the only one still using the pool table). If it gets "accidentally" trashed she'll have no choice. Then I can put two tables in that room. Using the ole squash here kids.

D, Thanks for the atta-boy, I appreciate it.

Beautiful looking table. Top notch woodworking!

I do have one query about the router work you've done here:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/initialmockup1.jpg
It looks way sweet, but since you didn't make the Fillet flush with the top surface are you concerned about chipping? I custom designed my son's closet and on the shelves I did used the bell router around the edges and over time it has chipped away in a few places. Now granted, the primary reason it chipped had to do with him tossing his shoots on to it and also because there wasn't a lot of support underneath it. Of course your table won't have anything near the amount of stress and hardships with just people playing on it, but that small ledge, over time, will prolly wear down and its worth thinking about before you apply the stain and poly.

Ill regardless, great looking table. You definately have something to be proud of there!

Thanks Nu,

Actually never put much thought into that. I was just trying to copy the original design. its a good point. I'm not overly concerned with it though. I'm more concerned with putting dents into it (from tossing it about) before I get the poly down to harden it some.

nice work sir! I love the thickened subplatform that attaches to the peds. I bet that table is one heavy mutha. What color speedcloth and padded rail?

I have black whisper vinyl for the rail and black unsuited speed cloth ready (like the piece I'm copying). But because of the "antique" used look I was trying to get (and love on some furniture pieces) I'm rehashing this. I'm thinking of maybe using one of the old west faded custom cloth themes. what do-ya think, will it work? Its still up in the air.

Yeah, this is one heavy mutha.

The foil on the iron is on there because the holes on the iron are filled with adheisive from prior use (taking off banding/adheisive from this and other projects). I was just trying to protect the banding from staining because of melting adhiesive. Though since covering the iron I haven't had another one of those aliens invasions.

in keeping with the old west theme I would use one of the distressed vinyls....color dependent upon the cloth you are using.

I've used that minwax polyshades on a table before but I don't know how it's holding up. It's been a while since I've talked to that customer. I've used it on some furniture I've made and it works great but then again it doesn't get the same usage as a pokertable racetrack. After using gelstains and water based acrylic lacquer clearcoat, I won't go back. ;) Looks good so far though! :)

morningwood
11-26-2008, 02:40 AM
I do not plan on depending on the polyshade poly-u alone. three or so coats of clear semi gloss poly-u and it'll be good to go.

I'll have to check out the water based acrylic lacquer clear coat.

Thanks.

are you going to make a full thickness padded rail that extends down the whole side of the table or are you going to use edge banding? Also, have you thought about putting a vinyl insert where you have the routered areas for chips? I think it would look cool and would cut down some of the noise the chip manipulators have when playing with the chips. it would give it more of a finished old style look also...IMO.

morningwood
11-26-2008, 03:25 PM
I'm Extanding the padded rail down the sides.

DAMMIT J.P. why didn't you mention that before? Vinyl inserts would have been The BALLS!!! Instead I pussed out and left the rail unrouted...

Let me get this right, so your saying the vinyl insert would be level to the race track? Thats sounds awesome, I agree, that would kick ass. This table might take a little longer (If I can get off the wussbag train).

Thanks for the input J.P. you got me thinking (again).

on the table he showed as his inspiration, the routered out areas that are for chips you could put a vinyl insert in to dampen the chip noise and dress up the table a bit.

Well I'm Sorry to say, this is it. I am thoroughly and absolutely dissapointed. You will see what I mean. This table is like some ugly chicks, the further away you are, the better it looks. Unfortunatly thats not the purpose of this P.O.S. I will definately NOT put this in the table thread....its not worthy. Here goes:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/POStablethree1.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/postablethree8.jpg

Here is where it gets ugly. The F'ing foam/rail work sucks so much balls Richard Simmons would be envious. I know its horrible, you know its horrible my dog knows its horrible. It looks like my Aunt Ethel's cottage cheese thighs. I need a better way to adhere the foam, and nail down my rail work. I have a couple of corners that are in need of a tummy tuck, (pull some staples and pull up the droop.)

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/postablethree2.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/postablethree7.jpg

I wussed out of cutting out and installing padded inserts. My ego can't take another let down. The blotch is actually a reflection, the race track is as smooth as its going to get. Looking at his pic it looks like the space between the race track and the playing surface is too tight, it musta pulled the cloth up so its slightly rippled...gawd...DAMMIT.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/postablethreee6.jpg

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii223/tharshebe/postablethree5.jpg

This could not suck enough, but yet it sucks some more.....I'm going to start drinking now. Then tomorrow its back to the drawing board to fix some of this bullshit. My personal grade = :fail:

Don't be so tough on your work, There are a ton of guys, myself included, that would be proud to own, have built and play on that table, Ask the next 20 people that come to your house what they think.... thought so they didn't notice the little things. If you can't live with it take a little time off from it, get re-motivated and fix the few small details.

morningwood

Thanks for the kick in the butt. I am by far my own worst enemy and hardest critic.

I'll tweak the rail (It will still suck though).

I'm also going to try a nylon custom cloth when I can decide on a design. Its a little thinner than the unsuited speed cloth and a little more forgiving (I can shrink it tight).

Still not worthy to post in the table thread...

it isn't that bad...btw...I love the look with the cupholders...reminds me of one of my tables!

cut the inserts that will eliminate some of the finish issues...you might consider a different vinyl...that ones tough to work with

I love the pedestal treatment...very nice! I'd give it a solid B and if you fix a couple things it will easily make the "A" grade!

X2 - I'd certainly not be embarrassed to play on that table! Whisper is funny, while it's very workable I find it can almost be too stretchy at times and can be tough to get the rail really smooth. I like the racetrack & cup holder style, I think it came out nice.

Have a tournament for it and get rid it for at least $2500, then you can make another one. Still a mighty fine table IMHO. ;)

Guys,

just want to say thanks for the kind words. I'll stop being a f'ing baby and see if I can improve the rail some.
