So I bought a scroll saw - I mentioned it earlier in a thread. I've been doing a little practicing and finally got my break this week when I was "assigned" by the boss (wife) to make 2 presents for my daughter's friends who had birthday coming up.

I found a puzzle pattern in a book I bought and it was on. About 3 hours later we ran into Alexis' friends' parents at Peter Piper (Chuck E Cheese) of the upcoming birthday saturday.
My wife graciously told them all about what I was going to make their daughter for her birthday...!!??

But the project came out really well if I do say so myself.

The first one pictured was my test one for ourselves. I kind of screwed up the beak with too wide a saw blade and too much speed.

The next pic is a dissembled puzzle ready for lacquer. A couple peices are assembled. It's had great reviews so far and I'm quite proud of the work my wife and I did. I cut and she painted about 80% of the projects.

I'm really looking forward to making more projects. there's some sick stuff craftsmen have done on the web with these things.

Wow.
If that's your first whack with a scroll saw, I hate to see what you churn out when you get 'good' at it.

The parrot is awesome!

As far as other projects, I'm pretty sure I posted these links already in another thread, but check out:

I think I'm going to build the 'Serpentine' from the first site this weekend, got the plans a couple years ago and they just sat around. Of course I'm going to cheat and let the CNC do most of the work.

My sister is a pretty amazing painter with a definite unique style. She does benches, shelves, things like that. She might paint up one of these clocks which could turn out really cool.

Here's a link to a few of her things. Actually I'm not sure if it will work, as it's a Facebook album and I don't know if you have to be a 'friend' to see it.

I don't know - how much would you consider it to be worth?

I'm definitely going to sell some stuff. Pricing my own work is hard for me to do for some reason.

Thanks everyone!
I'll post some more pics of the saw tonight and a little review.

Gator - It's a RBI Hawk 26" throat - It's a big bad ass saw. I bought it used off craig's list. They cost about $900 but I paid $450.
As I was checking saw reviews online, one theme came up over and over.

People buy cheap saws and they suck for 2 main reasons.
1. Hard to change blades, which you do a lot - they dull fairly quickly and to do any inside hole you have to remove the top or bottom of the blade and thread it through.

2. Vibration - obviously the better the saw the less vibration.

It seems the guys who buy cheap saws either get frustrated with the hobby and sell the saw after very little use, or immediately upgrade to a nicer saw and again sell the pos with very little use.

One last thing - buy a saw that uses pinless blades - all the better saws do. The blades that have a pin in the top and bottom are too big to do intricate work and the supply of them is limited. Pinless gives you better selection of top quality blades.

BigSlick could probably chime in too.

Nope, I have a crappy one that hasn't been used since I bought the Shopbot. I will agree that when it comes to tools, always buy the best you can affort, or you'll just be buying it again later.
