Sony bdp-s350
Sony bdp-s550
Panasonic DMP-BD35
Panasonic DMP-BD55
Playstation 3
maybe Samsung 1500
Video output and load times will comparable for the 1st four and probably the ps3. Depending on how you have audio setup might determine which is best.

Thanks guys. That's what I was hoping for, someone who actually has one and like or dislikes it.

PS3
FTW.
$399 (or whatever) now. Plus, you get a "free" game system with every one! ;)

didn't someone on here mention that if you get the ps3 you get the automatic firmware updates whereas with standalone you dont?

The PS3 definitely DOES have updates through a 'Net connection. Other standalone models MAY have this...but the PS3 100% for sure does.
These updates are for not only the BluRay player hardware, and the rest of the unit too (games, networking, video, etc.)

Hold on a blu-ray player. It's been confirmed the Samsung will be $150 for after thanksgiving sales.

I've heard also that PS3 is the way to go. I guess it's always good to here it from guys that won't steer you wrong.
That's my plan to wait until after Thanksgiving to get one.
Thanks guys
I'd wait until closer to Black Friday if I were you.
I don't have any advice on a player though, but the PS3 sounds awfully tempting IMO.

I forgot about that day. I am really leaning towards a PS3

Sony has (very vigorously) denied that they will lower the price (globally) on the latest PS3 hardware this year...but...they are still running far behind the 360 and Wii in sales, so the thinking is that there will be a price cut (or maybe a "cheaper model") out before Xmas. Maybe. Again, Sony denies it completely, but it wouldn't be to their advantage to admit it, if they could sell a few units sooner, at the higher price.
YMMV.
Good luck. You'll LOVE the PS3 if/when you get it!
A guy here at work said he saw an off-brand Blu-Ray player at Target for like $220 - FWIW.

Hold out 'till Christmas. Prices will come way the hell down with how tight the $$ is right now in the consumers hands. MFG's know that, and in order to move the volume they want to, they'll have no other real options other than lowering the price on them to get them out there.
I'd hold off on buying cheep / off brand now, for a later / mainstream brand later.

I also have a Samsung 46" LCD (1080P) and I have a PS3. Get the blue-tooth bluray remote and you're set. The nice thing about the PS3 other than it plays blurays and it is a gaming system, you can browse the web from it, you can store pictures/videos on the hard drive and play them on your TV from the PS3. You can store and play music from it.
It's basically a mini-computer that plays blurays and plays games.
I'm not sure you'll see them discounted around x-mas, maybe a free movie or 2, but not discounted.

Does anyone know if there is a DVD/Blu-Ray combo player anywhere on the market as well. I've thinking about a blu-ray player as well, but I wouldn't mind having the DVD player as well for my legacy movies.

I could be wrong but I thought all blu-ray players were backward compatible.

All blu-ray players are backwards compatible. Your dvd's will play fine and if you connect with the HDMI cable they will also be upconverted for a slightly better picture.

I have a PS3 and my roommate has a Samsung or Sony I'm not sure which one and you can tell a huge difference in picture. We both have 1080p TV's. Mine is a Samsung and his is a Sony. I've read on a few forums that the PS3 doesn't have the greatest Blu-Ray picture. Which after watching his Blu Ray I can see the difference.

Is the difference in pictures enough, that if given the chance, you would not have bought the PS3?

If you're a gamer than get the PS3. I thought I would be one I played a few games now I just use it as a Blue Ray Player so it depends what you want to do with it.

If you are not going crazy with audio, the PS3 would be... ok. However, there are a few players out now that are really great working with your netflix account to stream 1080p movies over your network which is AWESOME!!
If audio will be a big deal, check out the pioneer BD player

Bump. Curious as to what you ended up with. I just bought a Samsung LN52A650 and am starting the research for a Blu-Ray player. I've nixed the idea of a PS3 simply because I have a Xbox 360 and Wii already and there aren't any games specific to it that I would play.
I'm currently looking at the Sony BDP-S550 as it got good marks from Consumer Reports for a reasonable price.

I got a sony s550 just before christmas. I love it. If your receiver decodes the new sound codecs Dolby True HD and DTS HD, you can get the same results without paying for the S550 and getting the s350. Or if you are planning on using the speakers in your tv, the 350 would be good as well. I needed the onboard decoding and 7.1 analog outputs because my receiver is older and does not have an HDMI input or decode the new audio formats.
Once hooked up, it's pretty easy to navigate. Menus are mostly intuitive. It takes a little under a minute to power up and maybe 40 seconds for a movie to load. It's typical or on the quicker side for current models. The PS3 has much quicker load times, does not have the analog outputs and uses Bluetooth to control its remote, which eliminates easy use of a universal remote. Hope some of that helps.

I opted out of the PS3 also. Ended up getting a Wii and bought the Samsung BD-P1500
