View Full Version : Stocking a Bar -- What to Buy?

I'm turning our dining room into a Bar (my wife's idea, how's that for a wife...) and I am close to finishing. (Construction pics and finished pics coming soon).
I'm also finishing a poker table for someone so I will have $800 from the poker table sale to stock the bar. What should I get to stock the bar? I've written down a few things, but would like some opinions on what else to get...
I'd like a full service bar and to be able to make most anything.
Captain Morgan
Cruzan Rum
Bacardi Light
Bacardi Dark
Bacardi 151
10 Cane Rum
Grey Goose Vodka
Maker's Mark
Jonnie Walker/Jack Daniels
Patron/anejo Tequila
Gin??
Scotch??
Malibu
Kahula
Triple Sec
Grand Marnier
bailey's irish creme

Adopt me? Please? I don't eat much and could sleep near/on the bar...
Maker's Mark
Jonnie Walker/Jack Daniels
Gin??
I'd expand the bourbon selection to include Woodford Reserve, 1792 Ridgemont Barrel Reserve, or Four Roses. I also happen to like a variety of cheaper bourbons, but any of those three are top shelf selection and are superior to Maker's in every respect.
When it comes to gin, I would go with Hendricks, Boodles, or Plimouth--probably in that order. I do like Tanqueray, which is what I normally drink (because it comes in larger than liter sizes), and actucally prefer it to Tanqueray 10 and Ringpur.
For Irish whisky, I recommend Tullamore Dew and Jameson's.
You'll obviously need limes, lemons, and olives.
Bottom line, of course, in any bar selection, is get what you like to drink and a few things you haven't tried before. Usually, I'll get one bottle of the usual, and one bottle of something new. If the something new is not to your liking, you can foist it off on visitors or simply drink it after you're already drunk and taste doesn't matter any more.
I'm not really knowledgable about other liquor, though I've had just about everything with a proof greater than aftershave. I understand that Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich are good choices. But Scotch, like beer, tends to breed snobbish palates, and my palate is pretty pedestrian, so I do with Scotch what I do with wine--I keep trying stuff and drink what tastes good regardless of if ts appropriate for the dish/occasion/religious persuasion.

bourbon for mixing
good bourbon
rum for mixing
good rum
coke
that's about all you need really :D
then in the locked secret cabinet that only you have the key or knowledge of you have the brothers Glen and Johnny boy Blue. Perhaps a nice blended cognac such as a hennesy XO or the like.
Granted if you want a pre-made list for you...get a copy of the Maker's Mark Lounge bourbon list. That pretty much has everything you'll need

For swift female inebriation, I recommend root beer or peach schnapps stored in a very cold freezer. It becomes very syrupy, the alcohol taste goes away almost entirely, and they lap it up like kittens.
So I've heard. From a friend.

No Canadian Rye Whiskey. A bottle of Crown Royal NEEDS to be added to the bar.

I always kept a bottle of peppermint schnaaps for that very reason. The alcohol burns goes away and it turns into panty dropper that freshens the breath at the same time.

Seriously, you really just need to evaluate what sort of people you are serving and then have the appropriate drinks. You should obviously have...
- A good bottle of Rum (Captain, Bicardi, Meyers)
- An Exellent bottle of Rum (Some good Puerto Rican shit or something from Trinidad)
- A good Bottle of Vodka (Sky, Absolute)
- An Exellent bottle of Vodka (Grey Goose, Kettle 1)
- A good Bottle of Tequila (Jose Quervo or something)
- An Excellent Bottle of Tequila (Patron, don julio)
- Probably one bottle of good Gin will do fine since most people don't choose that (my personal preference is Bombay Saphire)
- A good Bottle of Whiskey (Beam, Jack Daniels, crown royal)
- An Excellent Bottle of Whiskey (Single Barrel Burboun would be best IMO)
- An excellent Bottle of Scotch (Glenlevit, Glenfiddich, Or Black Label Johnnie Walker would be ok, better to have a single malt IMO)
That should get you started and obv. any special favorites can be added or substituted for my suggessions. don't forget the mixers listed above and vermouth for someone that wants a martini.

I wholeheartedly agree some rye whisky needs to be added to that bar. But crown royal sucks ass. If you can find it Silk Tassle is great. If you can't go with Gibson's over Crown.
And if you can find Appleton Estates rum use that over Morgan's.

Absolutely! We went to Jamaica for the honeymoon, didn't drink anything but Appleton. Love it. If you can find it, try the white rum as well.
First of all. How much drinking you and your friends plan on doing?
I would avoid buying a bunch of big bottles of expensive shit until you know its going to be consumed down the road. Also, why buy top shelf for a bunch of people looking to exploit you for some free booze. I say get middle of the road, which is still pretty costly, for the time being.
Maybe I'm just a cheap ass, but other than the bar looking cool with all sorts of expensive bottles behind you, I see this as a huge potential for waste. How often are you going to serve up a Gin martini? Why buy a bottle of top shelf of gin if you don't like it? To impress someone? Fuck 'em I say. They want top shelf....bring you a bottle as a bar warming gift. But then again, I'm a cheap bastard.
If you want the stock to be able to make pretty much any drink, then you may want to get a whole bunch of middle of the road booze. If you like and drink vodka, then get you a few bottles of what you like to drink. You like Beam, get you a bunch of Beam. Its your bar. You will be doing the majority of the drinking. I vote get what you like to drink. My philosophy is: I know what I like. I drink what I like. I buy what I'm going to drink. If someone wants something different, the liquor store is 2 blocks away and open late or drink what I'm having.
If you prefer beer over liquor, then I'd invest in a nice kegerator, stainless steel jobs. Then get a keg of what you like to drink, not some micro brew shit that sounds cool to say you got a keg of it and end up picking up a case of Bud Light because you can't stand to drink the cool sounding beer in your kegerator.
In review.
Get what you like to drink
Get the booze variety pack to stock the bar.
Someone has a complaint, tell them to bring you a bottle and you will be more than happy to have it for their next visit.

Well, it looks like I will have the bar ready for the Pimp & Ho party later this month so I got all the shopping done for the bar...
I agree with skipping the stuff I won't drink. I did weight the buying to what I like and what I will drink. However, I do also want to be able to make almost all drinks. I'm not really worried about someone coming over and drinking the liquor because if they chug an entire bottle in one night they will replace it. The people who will drink at the bar are people I trust and consider friends.
That being said here is what is available at the Ugly Oyster Irish Pub (the bar):
Woodford Reserve
Jim Beam Rye
Jonnie Walker Red
Southern Comfort
Grand Marnier
Maker's Mark
Connemara Irish Whiskey
Jack Daniel's Green
Appleton Estates Rum
10 Cane Rum
Tortuga Rum
Cruzan Single Barrel Rum
Barcardi Select
Barcardi Light
Barcardi 151
Malibu
Parrot Bay Coconut Rum
Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum
Tuaca
Bailey's Irish Creme
Kahlua
Peppermint Schnapps
Jagermister
Grey Goose Vodka
Skyy Vodka
Bombay Sapphire Gin
1800 Silver Tequila
Patron Anejo Tequila
plus an entire shelf of mixers/add-ons. And a keg of Miller Lite (yuck, not for me, for the poker group) and a keg of Spaten Octoberfest.

Well, one of the two kegs is Miller Lite. I built a 2-keg kegerator out of a freezer. I had a poll to which beer everyone drinks at our poker tournies and Miller Lite won by a mile. So I put in a keg just for the poker players. The other keg is for me/friends. That keg is "Spaten Oktoberfest":

North Dallas.
Sure invite sent. But there some rules:
Each guy attending has to pay $25 into a prize pool. For that they receive 5k in Pimp Cash. Throughout the night whenever you want something you have to negotiate with someone's Ho to perform the task for you. After you have negotiated a price with a task you pay the Ho. The Ho keeps half and gives half of the money to her Pimp. The Ho with the most cash at the end of the night wins the prize pool.

MillerCoors drops clear malt drink Zima
MillerCoors LLC said today it has stopped brewing Zima, a sweet, clear malt beverage that was among the first "malternative" drinks.
The new joint venture of Miller Brewing Co. and Coors Brewing Co. dropped production of Zima because of "challenging malternative segment sales and declining consumer interest," according to a statement by Andy England, chief marketing officer.
"This decision is necessary to reduce complexity when it comes to our brand portfolio, allowing for more focused activity at retail on consumer-preferred brands, especially Sparks," England wrote. Coors launched Zima in 1994.
Sparks is a citrus-flavored caffeinated malt beverage that was created to appeal to drinkers who mix energy drinks with vodka.
