View Full Version : Who's runnin' an Onkyo AVR?
I've been shopping around for a new Audio/Video Receiver lately and for the price, it's kinda hard to beat a couple mid-range Onkyo receivers. Are any of you using these, and if so, do you like/dislike?
Last time I heard Onkyo was early 1990's, and they were tits then.
Namely these two:
TX-SR606 (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR606&class=Receiver&p=i)
TX-SR706 (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR706&class=Receiver&p=i)

Craw, the 606 ending up being my second choice for receivers. I went with the Pioneer 1018 so I don't have experience with the 606 but this is what it boiled down to.
Pioneer VSX-1018
3 HDMI & 3 Component video inputs.
All other video inputs composite only.
Onkyo 606
4 HDMI & 2 Component video inputs.
All other video inputs both composite and s-video.
Known to run very hot
In the end the heat issue and I could get the 1018 faster outweighed the loss of a HDMI input. The 606 should be a good buy as long as you have enough ventilation in your rack.

Haven't owned either one. But I've pretty much used Onkyo and Denon religiously since I was a teen. Onkyo's still have great build quality and price points. Some of the models due run hot so do your homework.
Just sold my old TR-8555 and 576. In the middle of renovations, so am looking to upgrade to something newer down the road.

Craw,
I should be receiving this one TODAY!

They are said to run hot and most people will place a fan on them.
My remodel is just about complete and this was one of the last things to buy, I have the speakers in the ceiling (4) but the cost of purchasing the unit and other items still needed (Sub-woofer, center speaker and I-pod dock was more than the whole system.)
Once I get it hooked up I'll let you know what I think.
Aloha, Pete

Yeah, let me know. Home theater in a box is something I haven't considered, but I might have to. We're remodeling our family room, and I don't know how much money I'll have to play with after buying new furniture. Gotta make the wife happy first. :)

I have a slightly older model of this same HTIB. I was happy with it for a long time. Eventually replaced the receiver because I wanted one with dual zone capabilities. Still use the speakers, though.
The Onkyo HTIB systems usually get good reviews along the lines of "great system considering its a HTIB"...

Well it was delivered today but I wont get it in till later this weekend if I'm lucky.
I'm not a sound person but from what I read the receiver seems pretty good overall.
It has the HDMI inputs for three things and should be pleanty for me.
The price point seemed pretty good also.
Will report once I get it installed.
Aloha, Pete

Thanks for starting this thread. I am in the middle at looking at my first big screen flat panel, AVR, & Speaker setup. I am 90% sure I am going with Onkyo AVR and Sony Bravia LCD. Need to pick the Onkyo model then start on teh speakers. I appreciate the info and comments in this thread...

Same here - trying to figure out what the best receiver will be for me, and also speakers. Have you given any thought to in wall/ceiling speakers?

I had one of their higher end units way back when (late 80's / early 90's) and it was the shit. Doesn't help you today, but if they have kept the quality and engineering in them, then I'd imagine it will be money well spent today.
