Mount it where it looks best in the room. Pay attention to the light that will hit it. Usually you want your eye level to be about 1/3 up the screen from the bottom. More important with larger screens, but that's a rough guideline even for smaller screens. Above the fireplace looks cool, but isn't the best location for actually watching the tv. If this is your main set, I'd want it to be comfortable to watch.

There are a couple of standard mounting patterns used on various tvs. Check which one yours has and then make sure the mount you buy will fit it. At a minimum, you want one that tilts a little bit. I put mine in a corner, so I needed a cantilever mount. Also needed it to swing so we could see it from the bed and from the other side of the room. You also will likely need to put it into a stud, so pick your location and make sure you have a stud in a good spot. Helps since you'll likely want to put in an outlet too. For mounts, I like Omnimount. Good stuff. Retail they can be expensive. I think mine listed for $300. Got it off ebay brand new for $60 incl shipping. Circuit City has a wholesaling arm that they use to dump ripped box or returned items on ebay. Circuit Trader or something like that. That's who I bought from. Couple pics of the install.

Thanks guys, I have the tilted wall mount on order, will be here in a few weeks.

Question, what is the optimal distance to sit away from a 46" TV? I rearranged my room and now sit further away, and it looks much better. Distance isn't insanely different than the old setup, maybe a foot to 2 feet different....

Rough guide is 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal.

Did someone post a good place to buy the mounts recently? I can't find it. I swear someone posted a link to a place that sold wall mounts for well under the price you'd buy at in store.

get your mount/cables from monoprice.com I buy all my stuff through them and it's top notch. I bought 3 wall mounts for 39 bucks each a few months ago.

I found this one at newegg I was going to pick up. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824997913

I'll check out monoprice first though.

I got my mount at Sam's...$100 for up to 52" television. YOu can mount it straight or with a tilt. For $150 you can get a mount that lets you angle out from the wall a few degrees if you want. Took about 20 minutes to get the mount on the wall. It came with a little stud finder and had a level mounted on it so you knew if you were straight.

As for position, I sat down on the couch in a comfortable position and mounted the tv so that the center of the screen was roughly straight ahead from where I was looking. I had my wife mark the spot for me. I then, to be anal, took a laser pointer and held it to the side of my head. The point of the laser was almost dead on to where I had the wife mark. Looking back though I wish I had dropped the tv about 2 inches lower than this spot. While it's good for me, other people have to look up slighly.

Alright guys, here's the deal. I bought the mount via Walmart online, ship to store. $60 after tax, this mount tilts and is able to hold up to 200 lbs, which is plenty for my 46" Samy LCD.

Mount comes with studfinder and built in level:

I hung the TV by myself, start to finish. Lifting the TV wasn't the issue, but getting it to hang without having eyeballs on the back was tough. But, when it's up, it's up.

Today, I built 2 floating shelves for my Dish receiver and my PS3. I built these from a hollow-core door. Rather than building them from scratch, I just zipped the door - 90% of the work was done before I even cut it.

So, if anyone can magically photoshop my pictures and make my wires diasppear, that'd be great...and what I mean is so that when I wake up tomorrow, my wires are in the wall.

Good thing is, the wall I hung the TV on is completely hollow, so I just have to get it done....

Duude, looks good but you gotta do something with those cables!! I know how it is when you just wanna get it up and start watching! A buddy of mine bought the same mount from Walmart, that stud finder really sucked!

Yeah, I used a really nice laser black-n-decker stud finder, but I think I could have gotten by with the one that came in the box. I hear ya on the wires, I just wanted my stand out of the room. I'm waiting for my neighbors dad, or my grandpa (in-law) to help me run the phone/cable/power for me, then it'll all be hidden. Until then, it's ghetto-fabulous!

zz-kai-, I just bought myself the samsung 46 LCD. Do you know if the mount that you got will work with steel studs? I framed out my basement with steel studs and when I was putting them in I noticed that they weren't the most sturdiest things compared to wood, however when the drywall was screwed to the studs it firmed them up alot. Just curious as to whether or not you need a different kind of wall mount.

I do believe I recall seeing in the instructions that it does work with steel studs.
