I stopped in at Lowes and all I saw in oak were boards that were maybe 1/2" or so thick. Is everyone taking two of those and glueing them?

I was hoping to find something along the lines of a 2"x6".

I use 3/4" oak boards from Lowes or local lumber yard.

I glue up two pieces of 1/2 or 3/4, whatever I can find.
Make sure you don't install your hanger bolts in the glued joint. Drill your pilot hole for each bolt in different pieces of your your glued up piece.

No problems with the hanger bolts splitting a board that thin?

Not yet. I drill the pilot hole and then screw in the hangar bolts. I use 5/16" hangar bolts.

Home Depot sells oak that is 1.5 inches thick, it's like 5 or 8 bucks a foot. That's what I use, but I used to glue 2 together until I found that stuff.

Hi Guys, It's been a while but I thought I would chime in real fast.

For the few tables I have done in which I needed a stretcher, I purchased a red oak Staircase tread from Lowes. Can't remember the exact dimensions but It was plenty long enough and you can rip it to get two good stretchers out of it. These are about 1" think and very hard so no warping so far what so ever.

Now that being said, these treads are usually only finished on one side but if you dig through the piles a bit you can usually find a few that have two good sides and you will just need to Sand the un-sanded side.

Golf season is over so I hope to be back to poker playing and checking out this new forum more.

Have a good day,
Scott

Menards sells 2" x 6" oak if you have one in your area. Be prepared to spend some money for one board though. See if you have a woodcraft or any other hardwood / mill in your area. They should be able to get you a piece of 8/4 oak easily.

I did mine with 8/4 maple from a specialty hardwood/lumber store.

I just used 2 x 8 pine board (spare lumber) cut to size and used the 12"x 48" Band-it red oak wood veneer (trimed to fit) before inserting the hanger bolts. The peds are Parawood (hardwood) and is suppose to stain very similar to Oak
