That actually is a pretty handy tip... Thanks.
I did something similar when I put my new deck on last summer. My uncle is a union carpenter and we used a nail with some wire (similar to the wire on the locator flags when you call before you dig). Took 3-4 pieces of wire, bent it in an L shape, put the long part in the hole and pound in the nail. Did that into the mason block wall.

Trann, you're right.
But there are two schools of thought on the manliness of these sorts of things. One is what I call the MacGyver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGyver) school of thought, where you do things in a minimalist sort of way armed only with whatever you have on hand and your ingenuity. Well ingenuity aided by an Internet search engine. This tip appeals to that sort, especially older curmudgeons like me.
The other school of thought is anything that can be done can be done better with the aid of explosive devices. Come to think of it, that also appeals to the older curmudgeon set as well as the younger crowd. Us old farts could go either way.
The younger crowd will usually take explosive devices every time.

I just use tapcon screws.... It's easier and you don't need a crowbar to remove them. they just screw out. they have all different sizes also ;)

You don't use anchors with those? Just a pilot hole?

Just a pilot hole. Each box comes with a drill bit too. I used them to fasten my footers all the way around my basement. I put a bit of cement sealer in each hole just to help keep the water out, but it's easy (especially when I mess up and have to pull them out to redo something).
