I built this pergola last November. I really took my time on it, an hour here and there, for about two months. We were really pleased the way it came out.

This year we put in a flagstone patio underneath and planted vines at the base of the pergola. Should look nice when it's full grown.

We live in a townhouse and the driveway is in the back. We have very limited backyard space. But it is cozy and we're the only ones in the neighborhood with a backyard this cool!

I love it, looks nice man. Great stain color, really accents the bricks and such.

Did you plant grape vines, or what sort of vine are you growing?

Thanks! I planted some flowering vines - a couple color varieties of Clematis and some red flowering vine that the wife brought home from Lowes and said "this looks pretty, put this out there."

Will add pics of vines and flagstone next.

Looks great, what are the measurements?

9 feet along the house, then it comes off the house 7 feet. 4x4s for the posts, 8x2s for the heavy cross beams, 2x4s for the beams coming off the house, then a bunch of 1x1s on the top.

Went with Cedar for it's weather/rot friendliness, and then stained and protected it before construction, which much easier than trying to do it afterward. The longest 4x4 cedar posts at the local home depot were 8 feet, so that's how high we took it. You can see it comes just above the door. It was a lot cheaper than I thought it would be. Screws, wood, stain - all in all probably under $400 in materials.

Are you afraid the weight of all the ivy may prove to be too heavy on the boards attached to the house? or even for the base of the posts?...what are those anyway.

I think the vines will be okay on the top, just gotta keep em pruned back. If you turn your back they will grow several feet in a matter of weeks.

Because the posts were only 8 feet long, I went with those post holders. You can get them from like 24" and longer. I got 30" posts from Home depot for under $7 each. You just put in a scrap piece of wood and drive em into the ground then put in the actual post. It's not going anywhere in this texas clay.
