Hi All,
I just built my first faux fireplace. The woodwork was pretty straight forward (I have experience with woodworking), but the brickwork was a first for me. I used 1/2" brick veneer. It came out pretty good, but it will be a long time before I do that again :)

I agree, masonry work is a pain in the ass, and one of the few things that I typically hire someone else to do the work.

nice job. Any construction pix of the woodworking? further descriptions of it? thanks!

I wish I had some constructions pics, but it went fairly quick. Basically, it's just (4) panels biscuit joined together, plus the center spanning pieces (the center panel above the opening was a bit tricky).
The top is a 3/4" thk. board with crown molding underneathe (I got that free from work ;).
The platform is just a ply platform that I cladded with more free molding ;) (I also had enough to do the entire living room :D.
Tile for the plaform is straight from Home Depot, and the brick veneer I got from a place called Brick-it. (100 bricks went into it )
Overall - A fun project, and a great coversation piece.

It looks cool and all, but may I ask why? What would be the purpose of a non-functioning fireplace?

Just a decorative focal point in the room. There are so many faux fireplaces sold in places like Home Depot, but they are all so small and fake looking, that I wanted to make a more real looking one myself. I just updated my original post with an updated pic. You'll see that candles look pretty good in the unit.

My dad is just finishing one himself. They have an electric "fireplace in the box. I haven't seen it yet, but my Mom swears it looks just like a real fire. The jury's still out though.

Yes, I built the fireplace with that in mind, so one day down the road I could insert the electric box with minimal retro-fitting.
