I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to make them. Show them off!

I haven't made them but I really think they need a new name. We call them Bean Bag Boards around here as cornhole in the Ozarks has a whole other meaning.

...it's got that same meaning here in MI, lol.
Anyway, nice job on the boards. I dig the old school Tigers logo!

Yeah, same meaning here too... game supposedly originated in Cincy, so go figure.
Thanks. Took a while to find a jpg on the net that I liked. Lucky for me, we've got Cadd at work, so I printed a lifesize copy out and traced as best I could.

It's so funny that all of a sudden bean bag toss is the 'latest thing'. I think I'II need 2 make me some boards and give it a try. Anyway, nice job on the set: looks good.

Is there an 'official' size for the boards, holes, elevation, etc? We're looking to do a set for tailgates and the beach.

Cool. Thanks. 2x4 seems overkill and real heavy. Does 1x3 bounce? Do people really make their own bean bags?

The specs JLew posted are regulation size. I kinda like playing on the "tailgate" version which is 2x3 and only 9" high. all the other dimensions the same.
I made a set for the 4th of July this past summer.
They are heavy and sturdy. I just need to find a better place to store them, like on the wall much like my 2 poker tables.

These are my custom fab'd drink holders. I used 2 corners from a poker table, a 3' long piece of 1.5 x 1 and some scrap 1/4" ply to put the cup holders in. Painted to match the boards of course.

I purchased a set of 8 bags at the local farmer's market for $30. Worth every penny IMO just due to the potential PITA factor.

How did you attach the 3' long piece of 1.5 x 1 to the ply?
Are they stable?
How did you attach the 3' long piece of 1.5 x 1 to the ply?
I used a big ass deck screw. 2.5" or 3". I pre drilled so I wouldn't split the trim piece, found the center of the rectangle and drilled a pilot hole
Are they stable?
As far as stability, they are money. I did have a larger rectangle base(larger than the cup holder rectangle) and they just didn't work stability wise. I did cut some spike looking things to attach, but thought it would be a pain if ever used on concrete. I was cleaning up the garage for the 4th and happened upon some old corners from a poker table and thought it looked cool and would be more stable than the smaller rectangle, so I gave it a shot and it worked. I moved the post closer to the front point in hopes to gain more stability and I think they work pretty well. When my son is playing, he will stack his bean bags on a drink stand because its easier for him. I can stack all 8 on the stand with no problems at all.
Those look really good T. Well done!
Thanks!
Here is a pic of my first version. I only have 2 spare jumbo SS drink holders, so I'm still using the coke cups for the time being on the other drink stand. It looks ghetto/redneck/whatever, but IDGAF, it works! I was looking for a more traditional cup holder, but happened upon these coke cups at the $1 store and got 4/buck. They were just too wobbly for my liking. But totally made from scrap wood.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c23/TrumpTables/random%20stuff/IMG_4205.jpg
inside of the coke cup to gain some height. I put the cut outs from the hole saw in the coke cups to make a floor for a can/bottle to sit on.

Hey T, that's a nice clean garage you got there. ;)
Almost as much crap laying around as mine has, LOL
the garage is much cleaner now. I had to clean it up for the party on the 4th. The workbench area is always pretty much a mess, but I got the bike up on a hook and the extra ply scraps are a bit more organized now. That 1/2 of the garage is mine with all the poker table crap/chairs etc on that side. The house side is pretty much spotless.

Hey T...what are the rectangular pieces of plywood next to the plastic cupholders on the underside of your poker tables for?
Hey T...what are the rectangular pieces of plywood next to the plastic cupholders on the underside of your poker tables for?
They are the base the chip trays sit on. When I built my table a few years back, I had only played on those shitty table toppers and they all had chip trays. I also had scoured a table building website and couldn't find a table with chip trays, so I did one myself to have one out there. So I picked up some racks off ebay, and routered out the chip tray spaces in the racetrack. The chip racks are 1.5" inches tall, so the trays sit flush with the racetrack (2 sheets of ply), but they didn't have a bottom to them, so I engineered one out of 1/4" ply. Works pretty well.
But if/when I make my another larger table for home use, I won't put in the chip trays as most people don't use them, or you get so many chips, the trays over flow. I now prefer just a racetrack. Here are some pics.

Nice design mackel. Did you hand paint that or is it some type of transfer?
I've got a moderately off-topic question for all of you finishers? How in the hell do you paint/finish anything without it sticking to absolutely anything that touches it?
I was finishing a set of boards I built for a friend's dad's birthday and was trying out the new Rockler HVLP Sprayer (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10469&filter=hvlp) I got and if painted wood touches painted wood it sticks. I sprayed the underside, two coats, let them dry out in the 100+ AZ sun then turned them over for a couple coats on the front. The fronts got at least a good 3 hours of dry time in the heat and when I set them aside to finish the legs the following day the bottom of the wood frame (that had had more than 6 hours of dry time) stuck to the top.
It's really irritating the shit outta me. I've noticed the same thing with my stains and the first set of boards in this thread still stick to this day. No paint comes off but they stick together.
What am I missing in my finishing? Do I need to let this shit dry for 24 hours before I attempt to do anything with them?

Mike
For my design I took a JPEG file to a FASTSIGN store and they made a decal for me. I cut it out stuck it on then sprayed a few layeres of polycrylic over to evenout the surface.
as far as the baords sticking you are not letting them cure long enough to use. Also if you used regular poly over paint it is not compatible and would stay soft. you need water based poly over paint.
big0mike
08-18-2008, 12:44 PM
Did they print it on a clear material?
The first set of boards that still stick have no poly on them at all. This latest doesn't either since I'm using semi-gloss which is supposedly the paint to use on boards. I guess I just need to give them a lot more time but I don't know how much they need. The legs I sprayed Saturday. When I turned them Sunday to paint the side I couldn't reach they would still stick to the sawhorses. That was at least 18 hours of drying time. The can says dry to the touch in 1-2 hours, repaint in 6. In this heat I would assume it cuts down on that time.

thanks for the answer. The routered out trick worked just fine. How does that table play? Have you thought of routering out some hardwood in the same shape as the plastic tray to replace the plastic? One of the guys tables that I play at regularly has a custom table with wooden trays about that size and the chips to overflow quickly. That's why when I build one with chip rails that I make more than enough space for the chips, even for late in the tournament when you have lots of them.

they printed in on white. I used an exacto knife to cut it out of the sheet it came on.

The table plays just fine. it is the standard Junell knock off. I hate the airbrushing of the name. I f'd that up by not attaching the velveteen to the board and just giving it to the tattoo guy. I know better now.
I love the table because its my first, but I see every imperfection everytime I look at the table and it drives me crazy. I'd like to re-skin the top with the micro SSC...but I paid so much for the airburshing I can't bring myself to do it. I do need to redo the vinyl because it has a tear in it, but games have died off and the tear isn't getting any bigger.

I am a fashion icon. I thought the camo shorts went well with the Super Troopers shirt for a national holiday.
Make you some boards, paint them up with trojan colors, hell the game in the parking lot may be better than what is on the field this year.

Thanks fellas. Got these done for tailgating this year. Not perfect. The purple paint crackled a little bit and I ran out of steam for redoing it. I'll fix it in the touch up round. All said and done including bags and decals from ebay was $100.

nice boards! I think when I build mine I will put a handle on one side and hinges with removable pins to join them together. That way easier to maneuver for storage.

If you make it from 3/4 ply and 2 x 4's the individual boards weigh about 35 lbs. Putting them together is a great idea but heavy to lug around together.

Thanks. A couple things I'd do differently would be to use 1x4's for the frames to lighten them. The legs are 1x3 because that's what I had laying in the garage but the frames are 2x4 and overkill. I only used one carriage bolt per leg, so the legs fold up easily without having to deal with the wing nuts. I'm comfortable with that, but any kid 8 y.o. or under views the boards as a skate ramp and instantly moves to jump on them.
I'd also be smart and reduce the orbital action on my jig saw to make cutting the holes easier. They aren't as round as I'd like them. Easy project and instant fun for bbqs. Even the ladies like to play.

couldn't you use 2x2's and 1/2" plywood? or wouldn't it be sturdy enough?

It would be sturdy enough. But if you go by the official rules, the front edge is to be 4" off the ground. I think as long as you are careful joining the frames the 1x4 would give you the weight savings and the right height.

I would think you could make foldable legs in the front and back and streamline the construction to save weight and also to be able to combine the two pieces into one to make carrying and storage easier. Just an idea. I am now inspired. thanks!

Definitely could. I cut the angles on the back legs by trial and error and set it up so the legs just swing out and are held in place by the weight of the board on top of them. If you used vertical legs you would just need to get the angles on the under side and devise a locking system, but probably not real hard to do.
You could even do it with removable dowels and a single carriage bolt so as not to use an extra wing nut.

There's a joint online that makes their frames out of what appears to be 1x4s. They make the boards with removable legs and one frame at 20x46 and the other frame 19x45. The two frames slide together so they are only 4" wide. Pretty slick.
Myself, I take my 2x4s and rip them into 2x3s to make them a little lighter but I'm wanting to try the 1x4 idea.
