I have been kicking the idea around of making the center of the table out of wood with some sort of inlay and then the area that would normally be a racetrack....making that out of felt/speedcloth so the usual racetrack table would be reversed. Then the usual padded rail and maybe a chip rail of some sort...sound feasable? ideas? comments?

My concern would be chips getting tossed around on your inlays, and causing gouges, dents, etc. When inlays, etc. are on the racetrack, people are usually moving their chips around deliberately in stacks, when they put chips into the middle, they're tossing them.

Heavy coat of acrylic, like bartops.

The hard surface in the middle would make it hard to pick up cards. Negated if the felt surface and center were level.

I had the same idea JP, but I dont have any insight for you. Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, picking up the cards/chips would be rather aggravating if you ask me.

I would think if you made the racetrack area a bit bigger than usual out of the felt/speedcloth that had volare foam under it that wouldn't be an issue. And of course making the track and the center level with eachother. I am still waffling on trying this....but will show pix if I do it.

Just my opinion, I wouldn't like playing on a table with a solid wood main playing surface. It would feel like playing on a fancy kitchen table. I already have a kitchen table. It would be loud when the chips went in, the cards wouldn't slide extremely well, it just wouldn't be right.

YMMV

I don't like it. Why re-invent the wheel? Racetracks are popular because they work well! Your trackrace would be cumbersome and annoying.
