So with the new site up and running, its got me itching to finish my basement. I took some measurements, opened sketchup and started going to town. So here is the question:
How much clearance do I need around the furnace? I am thinking functionally, it prolly needs airflow around it, but the real question would be for maintenance and repair. What would be the proper about of elbow room do I need to leave free? Thanks.

18 to 24" would be my best guess.
Should say on the unit itself what it requires for clearance.
What type of furnace do you have - gas, electric? Local code will dictate how much in front - but 30" should be good. You can enclose it in a closet - as long as there would be clearances in front with the door opened.
But for other clearances - nothing special at all. You want some for your vent (if gas) and that dictates whether it's single pipe or double pipe.
Enclose that bitch!

It's gas. The vent actually comes off at on ungodly angle to the chimney about 40" away, and is 30", and 42" on the other sides from foundation it would just be the one wall that I would be building that I was concerned about.

just make sure you leave enough room to remove the fan and work on things. A typical fan is about 12-15" deep. I'd leave a minimum of 2' on the side that the work will be done.
I left enough room to walk around all sides of mine.
