done for a friend. not my pick of color combinations as it is what he wanted. i discovered i hate putting cupholders in the rail. i also tried to talk him into sturdier legs than what you get for folding ones at home depot, but he didn't listen to that either. since he was paying for the table i had to give him what he wanted. now, however, he is thinking of getting better legs for the table. anyway...here it is.....plain jane table.

JP, You mentioned that you hated doing the cupholders in the rail: why's that? I ask because I'm doing my first in-rail cupholders & I'm very close to that part of the build now. I'll take any advice you may have to offer as I'd love to avoid any problems that you may have encountered & then learned how to avoid.
Nice table JP... I too am not a fan of doing the cup holders in the rail. I admit it does make for a nice table for keeping drinks out of the way, but I don't really like doing them.

Guma, why the disdain for in-rail cupholder installs?

X2...
I like the cupholders in the rail better. They're not all that hard to do but it is a little time consuming.

Cups in the rail is time consuming and can be a little tricky to get them to look perfect, but they're not that hard to do. Well worth the effort IMHO, I like them.
Since I have only done I think 4 rails with cup holders in them I have not had much practice with them. Being as anal as I am about the tables, so far I haven't been able to really nail the landing, so to speak.
No not hard to do, but like irish said, getting them perfect for me has been elusive. Some cup holders will sit in the hole nicely and others will pop up. Had to use the tape around the cup holder to make them fit tighter. But this bugs me to no end that they aren't all the same. Finished product looks great, but something about it still bugs me.
I would like to try the ring method on my next table with this type of config. So maybe after that I will have a different outlook on them.
Don't get me wrong, I love the way they look. If/when I redo my poker room, this will be my choice for cup holder placement.

The best tip I got from another member was to run your holesaw drill bit without the pilot bit in reverse to make perfect holes in the 1" rail foam. Make sure you do this from the wood side and push through. I usually run the Drill in the LOW setting for more torque and less binding.
Also make sure your bit is clean of any glue residue so it doesn't bind as well. I've done at least 30 tables with cup holders in the rail and the biggest thing you want to make sure you do is to center your top sheet of plywood to the bottom sheet. this will give you consistent cup holder insertions also without tape.
After you cut your X in the vinyl use a baby wipe on the outside of the cup holder and the X you just cut in the vinyl and it acts like a lubricant and doesn't leave a residue on the vinyl. Babywipes are the BOMB! ;)

FooKing Awesome tip!

Is it, you don't like making them, or you don't like the actual table.
