We have an outdoor firepit. I am interested in building a brick and mortar smoker right next to it... Anyone done anything similar, Plans? Pics? Ext?...

Did JP make a smoker in this manner? I didn't know that.
I am thinking it will sit right beside the fire pit, and I will shovel coals into a little hopper, that will allow the indirect heat to travel through a flu, onto the meat, and exhuast through a chimney. Guess I will need steel racks, and a big ole' steel door.. Other than that, just a lot of blocks and mortar... But, I don't know what it all entails other than that.

It is out in the back of the yard. So purdy is not an issue. Why, you got something?

IIRC, JP has a smoker, Moddy has one, and I think Zemo or someone else does a lot of smoking.
Would love to see some info on their setups.
I have plans to build one, but I also have a child.

You want a vertical smoker or horizontal? How much food will you be smoking?
I have the Weber smoker and have only used it 3 times since I got it on Father's Day. I'd say figure which style is more suitable for you and base your design off that. The real key, IMO, is to incorporate ways to control the air circulation.

I have the weber smokey mountain as well. The key like dermaestro said is proper airflow to keep temperature steady.

my smoker is attached to my grill(brinkman)...they don't make that anymore. I am seriously thinking about building a bigger smoker, but not the brick/mortar type. More metal/wood type. I am not boing to be able to help here. And IamDead....that was not funny!(the bf comment)
