Anyone come across the 3 red lights around the power button on the Xbox 360 before. From what I've found it seems the xbox had a hardware failure. Seems rather common as well. Did all the tests on the Microsoft website with no luck of getting rid of the lights. Has anyone sent there 360 in for repair? Whats the turn around time?? Only upside of this is that it is summer time and I don't play it much.

You have what is known as "The Red Ring of Death" or RROD. I believe it's from the GPU over-heating. This was common to the earlier generations of the 360 as they rushed it to market knowing full well that this was a problem.

Luckily, I haven't had the issue yet, but I've read that the turn-around time is acceptable.

Contact Mircosoft... they will send you a postage paid box for shipping the bitch in... You'll get a refurbished model back... My understanding is that the turnaround time is 6-8 weeks...

If that's too long, get the 20mb system for $299 now ($50 off until is sold out and replaced with the 60mb version)... You can try to sell the refurbished one, then, once it comes in.

Also, I was told to make sure you don't send in the HD with the system as it'll be wiped and you'll lose your profile, game saves, DL's, etc.

I have had the RROD twice...and the turnaround time was about 3wks for both. Not too bad, and DO NOT send in anything other than the console itself. If you leave a disc in, consider it gone. They will claim that they never recieved a disc and tell you to STFU. There should be NO charge for this as it is a Very well know problem. Last I heard they were supposed to be sending a check if you have the RROD instead of shipping out a refurbished one, but don't quote me on that. Good luck.

Just go buy a new one, swap cases between the new one and old one (serial # is on the case), then return the bad one in the new one's case.

I've done this twice now. LOL

if you need to use your x-box you can do a search on the "towel trick". I have never had the rrod but came across the vid's one day.

Good luck

Posting in this thread must have friggin' jinxed me. Saturday night I was watching a movie and it locked up. Figured it was the disc, but it was scratch-free.

Tried a game today and it now locks up before loading. Not the RROD, but still has to go in for repair. Unfortunately, they're charging me for it as this apparently isn't covered in the RROD extended warranty.

Edit.

Now I'm getting the RROD. I called back and they credited my account.

I was gonna say... Just let that bitch overheat until you get RRoD...

I've had about 4 or 5 xbox's have the red rings or some other problem. Fastest time was 2 week return, longest was close to 2 months. It sucks so bad.

I have gone through, about 4 Xbox 360's with the infamous Red Ring of Death, I purchased all of them from Costco every time one when out I took it right back, full refund and bought another one. Until last time around I got burned out on it and have not bought a new one.

Costco has the most liberal return policy I have ever seen (recently changed a year or 2 ago to exclude computers and TVs...I wonder why)...my first Xbox (the original) I had for over 3 years when it finally went out I returned it for the full purchase price and upgraded to the 360.

Sorry, may not help if you did not purchase it from Costco, but if you have a choice in the future it can save you some headache.

One note, you have to have everything it came with down to the cables (or at least a comparible replacment), otherwise no go on the return. I just put all the packaging/paper work in the closet. Beats waiting for Micro Soft.

I wouldn't get a PSP. If you don't already have a PS3 then I would suggest that. The new game release list for PSP's are very pathetic, and in my opinion there really aren't that many games out for it currently either. If you want something portable then yes go with a PSP, but besides that your money can be spent better elsewhere. But again thats just my opinion.

I meant PS3 - but was typing on my iTouch and screwed up. I doubt I would ever get a PSP! But if Microsoft fails me then I will switch.

I did call customer support and they have the box on the way. Also, they are throwing in a month gold service for me not being able to play to 2 - 3 weeks. Oh well, it's all good - I actually got to sleep at a decent hour last night for a first time

I dont have the rrod, but mine will not link up w/ cordless controllers. It's fucking infuriating and embarrassing. I was all set up to play some Madden 08 w/ the guys the other night & had to nix the whole thing because I couldn't use the controllers. It's bullshit.

I'm currently on #3 after two RRODs. I got a free month of Live the first time, and Viva Pinata for the second. (On a side note, anybody with kids want a free copy of Viva Pinata?) I'd give you a description, but that'd involve admitting that I actually played a game with "Pinata" in the title.

The third system has been running like a champ for a LONG time, but lately I've had controller link-up issues, too. I've got rechargeable battery cords that solve the problem when it happens, but it's still frustrating.

Since the whole thing was a birthday present from the uber-cool GF, I guess I can suffer through it. :D

I still haven't seen my damn box to return the console in! This sux not being able to load up CoD4 and kill people every night. The only bright side to this, I'm getting to sleep a lot earlier than I have been, and I'm wide awake in the morning. Totally blows.

COD 4 is the ultimate war game, IMO. I love the final mission on the airplane. There's just something really special about stabbing that guy right when he comes out of the pooper:) Is there another installment coming out any time soon?

CoD5 should be released before the end of the year, from what I've heard. It goes back to WWII however, which isn't gonna be like it is now! CoD4 is the only game I play - but it's all online!

COD 5 (World at War) is supposed to be released Nov. 11th of this year. You can probably find trailers/gameplay on YouTube by now. From what I've heard, it's based in WWI or WWII again, and not a modern version like COD4 .
