First of all, This site is Awesome! I thought I was all alone in going overboard with decorations, my garage set up, and of course the holy "Man Cave". I must say I have been humbled to no end in regards to what I have seen done on this site. It's obvious there are "Cave Dwellers" all across the country. Please give me your honest opinion on this question.

Say your town had this type of store - A "Man Cave" consignment shop solely dedicated to mans surroundings. It would be an outlet for men like us to sell items on consignment that we have duplicates of, grown tired of, need to get rid of, etc. I'm talking about only cool, quality stuff, no Junk! Anything and everything you could think of that outfits a man cave. It would be a place not only for those of us who want to sell items, but also a great outlet for shopping for all things cool and out of the ordinary.

Would you shop at this store? More importantly would you use this service to sell some of your goods? I appreciate your time and honest feedback.

Would I shop there...probably. But, I don't see a store like that lasting. It'd be a "niche" type store and only get a small % of the populatioin through it's doors. Would it be able to compete with pawn shops, ebay and the like? I'm guessing no.

Although a store like this would kick ass, I'm not convinced it would last, long term.

it might make it if it had a strong online presence along with the local following

It's got potential, depending on what's inside, and the price point you're shooting for. But you'd also be targeting a rather small market, so that would be my first concern on how to keep it lively after the first few months and what it would take to always bring a flow of traffic into the store.

Maybe it is just me, but I would probably prefer Craigslist for items such as these.

Thanks for the feedback thus-far........ Much Appreciated..

Something else to consider. Many don't have the time to deal with Craigslist and ebay. The back and forth emails, phone calls, the scammers, the spam, the lowballing, and the time it takes to deal with it all. Most of the time your having to meet someone to sell an item and wasting gas etc... as well as you can see exactly what your buying. The store would be furniture, decor from all walks, sports, collectibles, signs, neons, bar decor, etc... It would have good taste. In addition there's the garage consignment side. Tools, shelving, workbenches, and all things cool and manly. I don't think there's a man out there (well, real ones anyway) that doesn't have at least 5 to 10 items he could get rid of to make some extra cash for something else or to pay bills if needed. Especially in todays economy.

Once Again Thanks for your time.

I think its the wrong economy right now to open a niche store
Unless you are in the right location
I've picked up more stuff off Craigslist for free
27" Sony TV, 14" TV, 4x8 mirror, 10x10 bounce house for my son, coffee table, loveseat, lounge chairs

Plus lots more stuff at very low prices

I agree but hopefully the Man Cave era is growing thanks to websites and TV shows.

As a standalone retail shop...it's too easy to skim CL and Feebay. Now, if there were hookers and a blow dispenser in the bathroom...that might pique my interest.

There is the convenience factor to consider. Like most guys, I know what I want to get and I want to get it now and be done with it, no dickin' around. I don't want to waste time effin' around with some idiot on ebay or CL who's convinced that old PBR tap handle is a priceless antique and he insists on getting $200 for it.

Homebrew shops manage as 'niche' businesses, so could a "man-cave" store. In fact, it would probably be a good area for a homebrew shop to expand into. They already have a good customer base in the right demographic...

Homebrew shops do manage to retain business, but that may be due to the repeat customers for ingredients, etc. For a consignment shop, if there's nothing appealing on the first visit, many might not give it another shot.

Also, it's nice to think that you'd only carry only 'good quality stuff, no junk' and items 'in good taste', but as a consignment shop how would you judge and how would you tell someone that their stuff is junk?

Doesn't sound viable for the reasons already posted.

Get a liquor license and open a ManCave themed bar/consignment store. Use the consignment items as furnishings/decor until they sell. You should be able to pay the bills with the mark up on the alcohol alone.
