Just found this site
I started building in October
Roofs on, windows are in, framed out
Ready to start on electric & other stuff
I'm starting to put together ideas for stuff to include
Bar of course, bumper pool, hockey game (like fussball)
Reg size pool table was planned...but too many windows went in
24x36 divided into 2 rooms, plus walk up attic, garage under

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Garage%20April%2009/DSCF5891.jpg

Bar will be on the right
Doorway on the right will lead up to the attic
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Garage%20April%2009/DSCF5808.jpg

6x12' balcony will be off the triple doors

Pics are older, more work accomplished since then

Wow! That's awesome! Welcome to the forum!
Can't wait to see the follow on picks as you near completion.
Are you doing most of the work yourself, or contracting it out?

So far I'm doing all the work myself
I started the plans/design about 5 years ago
Other work on the house came 1st (sunroom/greenhouse/dormer back, ++++)

Sunroom - Man cave 2 :)

That is fantastic!
What do you plan for siding on the addition and I assume you are going to wrap the house in the same siding once it's done to tie the two of them together?

Really nice work Scuba Dave! Looks great!

Yes - new windows have been installed in entire house
Last 3 will be the Bay window behind the flagpole
Far right side & opposite side of the house will be shingles
The rest will be Hardi-plank - cement board - blue, just delivered

Its been a 5 year project, but lost 2 years - broken rib 1 year, twisted knee another year. So I'm 2 years behind. New driveway & garage doors next year

She did help with the 2 largest walls front & back, maybe 1 more
But I had to fire her, she was making too much noise at the wrong times ;)
Walls would make noise as they were raised into place & she didn't like that

So how much room behind the bar?

I put a 6' cabinet in as a mockup
I set it 30" out from the staircase wall
Under the stairs will be open, so a lot of room on that side of the bar

Holy understatements, Batman!

That's not a man cave. That's a damn man castle!

Nice work!

Atleast 36 inches...I can have 2 bartenders behind my bar and the have plenty of room to move around.

I'd tend to agree with 36ish to 40 inches. Anything over 40, you're using more space than needed, but at 36", you've got enough room to move around, even with 2 people, and you're not giving up a bunch of needed / valuable space elsewhere.

This is a home bar...honest!!!
To the right of the stove will be a 15" wide counter, and a wall to the stairs
The wall will be a 1/2 wall so you can see into the bar area as you walk up the stairs from the sunroom
The cabinet in place is 6' long, actual bar will be approx 10' long
The area under the stairs will be open
That upper part of the stairs to the right will have a wall starting at the bottom of the stairs & going up to close off the stairs
Stairs lead to a walk up attic - unheated
Right now I have the "bar" spaced about 30" out from the wall on the left
But with the open area under the stairs there is a lot of room
The left part of the bar that borders the stairway wall will be the tightest part with only 30"
But I'm inclined to leave it spaced out at 30" frpm that wall

From the back of the bar to the front of the stove handle is 50"
I figure with a 2" bar top overhang that will be down to 48"
PS - I'm thin - as is my wife ;)
I worked at a bar in Boston & the joke was that only thin guys could work as bar backs as the bartenders were big guys :)

Yah...OK - fixed that :D

I'm at 36" Min out from the wall now
That will allow for some shelving against the back wall for bottles etc
Maybe some 6" deep cabinets at the bottom for small storage

Bets5150

36" works best for me...Had some sink problems a few weekes ago and if I would have gone with 30" (as originally planned) fixing the problem would have been a PITA!!

I think I may go with 42"
Then install 12" wall cabinets as base cabinets against the back wall (4')
Then 6" shelving on top of that

That wil increase the open area along 6' of the bar to 5' from the back of the bar to the stove/area
That's where the sink will be

Also came up with another idea for the bar area
I have a Cam Neely hockey shirt I was going to frame & put up
Then I remembered we have shirts for my son
So I am going to hang his smaller shirts up as he outgrows them :)
Patriots...Red Sox...I don't think he has Bruins or Celtics shirts

One step closer....new bay windows are in
Built it out in front of the old one
Just need to put the roof on then I can rip the old windows out from the inside
This widens the Dining room from 8' to 10' wide

The old windows

New Big window going in

I also just found this site. I have a 25 x 30 ft barn that I will be making into a rec aka Man Room. At the moment it is nothing but a third story to an old barn. Where do I start? Besisdes the general construction aspect, how do I figure out the best layout and/or where to place things?
The ceiling is vaulted and I will be hanging all the country flags that I have done ops in. We have plans for two big screen tvs, but I need some help here. I don't want to blow my money, but I also was something that will be great.
HELP!

Roof is mostly done
I've started placing outlets boxes on the studs in the great room to verify where I want them
I also wired up a 6" recessed can on a plug so I can move it around between the ceiling joists to see light distribution

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Construction/Baywindow28.jpg

I also did a rough mock-up of the bar area

Not much progress on the Man Cave
I've been running electric, ran a 100a sub up into the stair well
Lighting circuits mostly run w/recessed cans in approx places
A couple outlet circuits have been run too

Last summer I started siding the back
Plan is to side the whole house, get garage floor in, doors & new driveway
Basically we want the house to look complete from the outside...sick of the construction look
We had a nice week & I ripped the front apart
I added R13 insulation in the old bedroom wall
Built a small wall against a closet & added R19 (total now R32)
Then I built a 1/2 wall along the front & added R22 - total maybe R26 now

Last Spring into early summer was a wet mess
So I'm getting an early start
Still a lot to do, but looking good...neighbors like the colors

Still working on siding the house
Just added up the new sq footage
About 3164 sq ft without the attic
Bank appraiser was here today & said since the "attic" will be finished w/9' ceilings it can be counted as living space
So that will be bring the total to 3677 sq ft
That's more then 2x the size of the house as we bought it

If I finish part of the basement that could be another 700 sq ft

Not much progress on the Man Cave
Looks to be 2 years now before that build takes place
Wife is out of work, no spare cash now

So I'm cleaning up the yard area, working on using materials I already have
New ~15x15' patio out back, patio block picked off craigslist for free
Also picked up 11 of the blue & white longers for free off craigslist
Plus the table & 4 chairs in the pic - bought 6 more matching chairs for $50
Solar hot tub connected & working, solar hot water is next
Getting the pool area ready to open the pool end of this month

So another site I am on (Moderator) I have a thread going on my house construction
I was looking for some info I knew I posted & could not find it
After 2 days & literally 2+ hours I found it & merged it with my main thread
I also merged some other threads back so That I could track everything better
Well come to find out 2 guys were tracking the View count on my thread VS their threads
They reported me to the owner of the site & one sent me a nasty PM saying that I had been exposed
I didn't know there was a contest for the most viewed threads
I was very surpised....then ticked off

One guy has started 6 threads total the entire time he has been on the site
The 2nd guy has started 21 threads total
I've started over 200 threads
I offered to merge all of my threads back to my one thread

http://www.diychatroom.com/f18/my-electrical-adventure-few-days-ago-73298/

God I don't need childish crap in my life
If it wasn't raining I would have been out building my deck

Don't be upset Dave. Sometimes it gets boring when you live in your parents basement. They just needed something to do.

It's funny that you mentioned that site. I was searching for some electircal question about a month ago and was linked to that site. I saw a post by "Scuba Dave" and thought to myself, how many "Scuba Dave's" could there be in this world. It's a small world here on the intertubes.

Yeah, it was just weird...I've removed all the argumentative posts...nothing to see any more

Turns out they were "tracking" me for weeks
Other moderators thought it was kind of funny
Owner of the site didn't see any problem & none of us could really understand what the problem was
But apparently they considired it some sort of contest as to who's thread was more popular
Which still doesn't make sense since a guys kitchen renovation had many more views then any of us

Oh well.....I went to a friends party & had a blast
I was driving & had to stop drinking before the short drive home
Sucks sobering up at a party

Well since I can't work on the Man Cave i'm working on the Yard cave
We had a 12x20 screenhours w/alum poles that got messed up in a rainstorm
So I decided to build a framework over the new patio for the screenhouse
Still need to adjust the fabric & secure it in place
But it came out pretty good

What are those things that look like screen doors?

Scuba_Dave

What are those things that look like screen doors?

Those are jalousie windows
I only have glass in the bottom 1/2 of the windows
If there is a breeze we can close the windows to cut down on the wind
There is a fire pit in the middle of that area, so helps with smoke
