Long story - we need a new driveway - and are getting a new patio first!
New driveway post later this month...

Ever since we moved into the house we hated the patio tile... it was a brown terra cotta - 6x6 - think 70's Mcdonalds. We also had a deck that was nice and combined the space was decent. The deck is 12 years old or so and really getting worn out and needed either piecemeal fixes over the next 12 years or total replacement.

We decided a larger slab on one level would be great. We had a landscape architect draw up a master plan and chose a contractor (out of 5 bids) who subsequently tried to fuck me over. Found another very reputable company who's been doing stamped concrete in Dallas for 30 years or so.

Saturday, my neighbor Bill and I tore out the deck on a whim, forgetting we were hung over from the poker game.... :) My wife helped haul away and we saved $800 for 3 hrs of work...

I rented a demolition hammer monday and started to remove the tile trying to save me another $350. The concrete guy comes over - sees my progress and offers me a deal - $150 to finish the job.... sign me up .... turns out, after he examined the door threshold, he didn't have enough room for a 2" overlay on the patio so he jackhammered out the patio on tues... damn if that wasn't the worst backbreaking work I'd see guys doing in a long time...

we're also moving the arbor posts out to the edge of the house so they're out of the way a lot more. Here's my temporary handy work supporting the arbor...

The end result after the 8 " slab was removed -

piles of crushed concrete/stone base material

the rebar is in - the outside footing trench is 12" - they were going to pour concrete today but we got over 4" of rain last night with a small tornado or microburst about 2 miles south... then parts of DFW got another 6-8" today .

Hopefully they can pump out the footing (moat) tomorrow and pour this bad boy. It's going to be stamped and colored. And huge! over 600 sq ft. This is covering all the area that's constant shade from some big trees behind us and over the playset. Can't wait to see the poured concrete... It's a muddy mess back there now..

more pics to come later!!!

So are you putting gas and or water lines out to your new grill island/bar? You could probably tie your sink drain lines into your eavespout line that you've got exposed...

just got home.- pissed I missed the great pour.... it looks awesome though.

I'll get some pics up soon.

I'm running gas out the wall - there's a gas fireplace right behind the wall of the house there. I'm not running a faucet but thought I'd run a sink in the corner there for some ice and bottles... good idea for the water drain.

I can't wait for this to be cleaned up tomorrow to have a good look at it with a cold beer.... speaking of beer - looks like a lot of work was done pouring concrete today, I'd better tip one up now to the laborers ;)

...subscribed!! Love watching progress pics. Im thinking of re-doing my double-wide driveway with stamped concrete (pavers there now). Whats the total damage from the contractor, Sunset? Here, stamped concrete goes for about $15-18 per sq ft.

the final product - sort of - they're coming back in a month to highlight some "stones" and clean up the edges a bit and seal it all.

I still cant' believe the highway robbery prices they charge for stamped concrete.
At the end of the day it looks fantastic, but it's spendy!

looks great. Be sure and post pix of the finished product.*(btw...the salary they pay for being a mod is too high according to BHO....have quads dial it back a bit!)

Looking awesome Sunset! It's amazing how much more good outside space can add 'room' to the house.

When we did our 800sf patio on the place in Boise, I found a guy who'd do it for $6K. I had another guy ask me what I paid for it and when I told him, he didn't believe me, said he would have charged me 2x. The first guy was doing it on the side, probably 'borrowed' the equipment and labor (hell maybe even the concrete) from his real job.

This was all an upgrade from a 10'x10' slab...
