This time next year the Underground will be moved into my garage. I have a few questions for you all that Id love to have answered.
1. The new space im moving to is my garage. How hard would it be to put a door and a window on the exterior wall?????? Anyone have any experience with this?
2. What size ac unit would you use to cool a 24by24 garage?
3. Types of flooring would ya recomend, carpet is out. I have a game every friday and rugs just get trashed
4. Would you all suggest a walk up bar? Like trans. or a walk behind bar?
Ill be posting pics after my wife has a clan out the new mancave garage sale. Id reallyl ike your input on the design. Im doign this over a years time to take advantage of sales and do it right. Oh and thats the time period the wife has given me! haha
Thanks for the input

1. Not hard, if you have some basic carpentry skillz. However this is kind of a loaded question based on the exterior material you are cutting through. More difficult if you are going through stucco, less if it's wood siding or something. Cut your basic door, 6" wider and about a foot taller than needed. Frame in the extra studs around the sides, and frame in the header for the door. Install door, drywall, weatherproof the outside, patch stucco, or trim the jamb in once the frame is in place.
2. Probably look at cubic footage of the space, and then compare to BTU req's based on diff. mfgs recommendations.
3. Sealed epoxy. See Guma's thread on his garage.
4. Sit in front on bar stools, and walk behind for the bartender. Gives you the best of both worlds.

Oh, and don't go monkey shit on the wall until you are sure there is no plumbing or electrical running through where said door is to be installed.
Best ot peel the drywall off first, then start hacking. Make friends with a sawzall, it's a wonderful tool for demo work.

I hear ya quads i love that saw. I use it on everything. I think im gonna take the step and put a window and door in this summer. I have an electrician in my poker league who said he would do the electric for free. Hes gonna install two fans and a exhaust fan for cigar smoke. I have another buddy who is awesome at laying tile so hes volunteering to help. Not sure what I wanna do on the floor. Thinking beige tile with black molding and dark chocolate brown walls. Ill post pics up and dimensions when my wife clears all the garage sale shit outta there. thanks for the heads up fellas

Started cutting the door and window holes today. Will hang both tom.
QUICK Question
when cut the door hole do i cut it all the way down to the cement in the picture below??

When we converted the poker room (garage) to the workshop for chips, I bought a split unit A/C. It is 24,000 BTU for a 650 sqft space in Florida Heat (read 90% humidity in the summer) It works great and was $1400 shipped to my door.
The biggest problem I had was finding someone who would actually install it since it wasn't their OEM equipment.
Garage floor, I did the Behr concrete paint and it is holding up just like the day it was painted, going on 2 years now. I still get comments from people about how it looks like real tile.

Yes, you need to cut the plate out as well. You'll hang the door high to replace it with a threshold of some sorts (alum / wood / etc.)

thanks quads this is goign to be easier then i thought. Anything else?????
I bought this two sided tape that seals it as well and i bought this stuff called "great stuff" for any shim gaps that may exsist. FOams up and seals it really nice.
Guma I saw yours. Im still debating betwe tile, what you did and carpet. Im in the northeast so it gets cold as hell in the winters so the rug may be my best bet. I like the idea of not having anything that will get staind from spills and what not so the tile and floor pain gets a vote there. Im not sure
I still have to hang the door and windowthen the electric, finish the bar, paint, flooring will be last so i still have a few more weeks to decide

Finally a post that I can add some good information to. :)
I've converted my 24x24 garage into a workshop and I put in a 12,000 BTU AC window unit that I installed through an outside wall. Most days, it does a great job if I crank it up to max and let it run about 30 minutes before going in. The garage stays at about 76 to 80 degrees most days. When the temp outside gets above 95, The unit strains to keep the temps below 80. When I'm not in the garage, I set the unit to turn on at 76 degrees and it cycles on and off through the day with more off than on time. But the temp the unit thinks the garage is at is off by about 5 or 6 degrees. If you are looking to get a wall/window unit like I have, I'd suggest moving up to an 18500 AC / 16000 heating unit like this one (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=250058-48789-FAM18HS2A&lpage=none). (Note: I have no affiliation with the mfg of the unit or the seller. :) )
Two notes on how my workshop is set up. 1 and 1/2 walls of the workshop are shared with the house and insulated. The other 1 and 1/2 walls are not insulated and the 4th wall has an uninsulated double sized garage door on it. Since I had drywall up on the walls when I moved in, I haven't pulled it down to insulate and I haven't gotten any spray insullation either to put in there.
I highly recommend that you make sure all 4 walls are insulated and that the garage door gets some insulation on it also. If you do that, you may be able to get away with a 12,000 BTU unit.

NC, thanks for the input. All were were insulated and drywalled when I bought the huse. Supposedly this is a rare thing, becuase everyone i talk to seems shocked when I tell them. Changing out the garage doors is not an option so I am goign o ahve to make due with whatever ac unit I put in there. We are mounting two ceiling fans as well. This should keep the air circulating. My buddy score to exhaust vents from a bathroom redo and we will be putting those in there for cigar games.
Below are hte pics of my door and window install
It went really smooth, much easier then I anticpated, I got lucky and just about every time i checked for level its was. Nt a problem at all!!

We enclosed our screened in porch last year, and had to put a heating / air conditioning unit out there as we couldn't get another register to the room (ducts run through the crawl, the porch is on a slab). We ended up getting one of those hotel room type heat/ac units and putting it under one of the windows. I don't remember the specs, but I can look them up when I get home if you'd like. Works really well both heating and cooling.

Sorry it took so long to post these... it was a busy weekend to say the least.
We had this put in our screened in porch when we enclosed it. The room is 15' x 15'.
Here's the heater/ac unit in the wall under the window.

Sorry about the crappy pics... cell phone just before I ran out the house this morning. I didn't have a chance to find the manual, but I believe this is the unit (it's an Amana): http://www.rainbowappliance.com/PTC094D37AR.html?utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=googlebase&cvsfa=673&cvsfe=2&cvsfp=PTC094D37AR
Hope that helps - you have any more questions, I'll try to answer them!
