View Full Version : Idea for a future man cave

So the wifey and I have been looking at houses, and with it will come my very own man cave. I'm toying with the idea of having one wall, or a small portion of one wall, look like hockey boards. I could use lexan for the "glass" and put a bunch of pictures behind them. As far as the boards themselves, what do you think would be the best thing to use? Just painted plywood?

That's a cool idea. And something that wouldn't be hard to do at all. I don't think I'd use ply tho. If you're gonna use plexi or lexan for the glass, that's pretty thin, so I'd look for something about 1/4" thick, but that won't splinter. I suppose a good sanded ply would work. I don't know how well hardboard would hold paint, but that's an option too. You want something smooth.
Don't forget the ad's! Viagra, Trouble's Poker Den, PMC, etc!

Oh, the ads are key to the whole look. PMC will definitely get a spot, don't you worry. I few coats of primer on some MDF would work, no?
Also, do you think one wall would look ok, or do the whole thing? If I did one wall, I was thinking do the curver corners and stopping there. Maybe an end wall where the TV would be or something.

That's an awesome idea! Only potential problem I see, after a few beers, are dudes checking each other into the boards. Maybe a little foam padding behind the glass would be in order... ;)
This is going up against a typical framed stud w/ sheet rock or masonry wall, right? I think either mdf or hardboard for the base would work fine. If you're looking to curve the ends by the corners of the room, hardboard will bend a lot easier.
What are planning to put behind the glass?

It's not going against anything yet, we're still house shopping.
As far as behind the glass, I could either put a bunch of sports pics up, or family photos and such. Open to ideas, so get em in!

I've been scouring the internets to see if anyone has tried this, to no avail. That tells me it must not work/look great, because I can't imagine I'm the first person to think of this.

You should make part of the hockey wall so it looks like the penalty box and you could put whoever you want back there. I am thinking a nice life sized poster of Richard Simmons or Rosie Odonell (make them have a few missing teeth with a black marker). Maybe it's just me...but I really don't see an end to the amount of humorous things you could put in the penalty box.

That's pretty brilliant. Hell, if the area I get needs to be built, maybe I'll build an actual penalty box.
