So back in July 08' I left the water on in the set tub in the basement.

Caught it in time before too much over flow happened.

Fast forward today ...

I was dropping some kids off at the pool and yelled to the wife to ask what was running? (water)

She says the washer is running, but washer does not sound like running water - different sound.

Sure enough I go into the basement and hear the running water and this time it was her.

Is there an alarm system I can buy that will warn of water level and or overflow?

They make alarms for when water heater tanks fail that'll probably work for you:

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100038838&N=10000003+90015

Thank you that is what I was looking for.

Tried doing a search by Water alarm on HD but was not using the right search words I guess.

Check a boaters site. They have alarms for water in a bilge, real common and may be cheaper than a HD model.

Had to google set tub...

Why do you turn water on in the laundry tub?

Someone else suggested this as well.

I'd go a step further and get an auto-dialer, either separately or as part of the water detection unit.

An example but not an endorsement:
