Anyone have some experience with this. We got home today from the funeral/cemetery and the wife notices a silver streak on the side of the house.

Well it appears that one the one side of the house that gets hammered the most by direct sunlight, the paint is bubbling up and beginning to chip off. We currently have painted aluminum siding, as best as I can tell.

I want to scrape and paint this house like I want a goddamn hole in my head. I figure the vinyl siding is going to be the best solution as I will never have to paint it and it should last quite a long time.

Looking for ideas as how much it may cost, and or the best route in which to possibly get this done, along with potential time it would take for this to be done by a professional crew. we have a modest sized tri level with a big 2 car garage.

Go with the vinyl, the newer stuff lasts forever and is practically maintenance free - a quick power wash and it looks like new. A contractor should be able to re-side your whole house in a day, depending on how hard it is to get the aluminum stuff off. If you have a few buddies you can do it yourself, it's not hard, just a lot of up and down on the ladder. Sorry don't know about prices though.

Most aluminum siding is not painted. Well, actually it is, but it was done at the factory. It is supposed to be a lifetime paint (the guy that designed it may be dead, that's about the only lifetime it will last). If your going to go this route, get several estimates and take the time to go out and look at their work. Ask them for references, of reworks, not new construction. In a perfect world, aka new construction, siding is a hell of a lot easier to put on. Be sure that this will include and fascia that may have some rot behind it, as this does happen. Make sure they are going to haul away all trash and your old aluminum siding. A professional crew should be able to knock out your house in 3-5 days, depending on crew size.

We have aluminum siding and got estimates to vinyl our house. The prices ranged from $7500 to $15000, my house is a single story rancher that is roughly 1600 square feet. This was when everyone was really busy, about 2 years ago, I could probably get it done much cheaper now. This did include wrapping the windows and all trim with aluminum(you will want to get this done too).

At the time, we deceided to paint the aluminum siding. It worked out really well and looks nice. The cost was mostly my wifes and my time.

So, if you got the dough, by all means vinyl it. If you don't, do not be afraid to paint it. If you want some tips on painting the aluminum, let me know, the wifey helped me, it's really not that hard, it is all in the prep.

At some time, I am going to have vinyl put on mine. I will probably replace the windows and do all the trim when we do.

We did alot of research on having vinly put on, if you want to shoot the shit about it let me know and I'll PM you my number, there is alot more to it than just the vinyl.

Good luck.

great reply JR.

The price point eats my ass. I was thinking it would be much cheaper.

I saw a coaching buddy who is a handy type guy, builds decks and shit like that. He's done vinyl on a few ranches, but immediately said....."No way is my fat ass climbing up 20+ feet on a ladder putting siding on your house!"

The aluminum we currently have is 2 types. On the front of the house, it looks like it is textured, and almost powder coated. The side of the house that is peeling off, is flat aluminum, and has been painted.

Its not like I'm not going to have the time to paint the house this summer...I just don't want to paint the entire goddamn house this summer!

We do have a HELOC with several thousand in credit on it we can dip into, but don't really want to. I love the concept of the vinyl with it being virtually maintanence free.

The other thing my buddy said was that with our house being built in the 60's, it probably isn't "wrapped" with the 1/4" barrier type shit. In the long run, it would make the home more efficient, but looking at about 10K to get the thing done, is more than I expected I guess.

We also need new gutters, so I'd like to knock that out at the same time, if at all possible, if I can some how manage to get the vinyl on the house.

thanks for the replies.

Well fuck.

I got my paint, Got a ladder, scraped off the old paint where it was peeling. Have a huge mess in the mulch.

Putting off painting while letting the siding dry as I had to hose off all the dirt etc. Looks like I only need to paint the one side of the house. The rest of the house is in pretty good shape and my buddy the painter guy says why make more work for myself. I like the way he thinks.

Hopefully the temps stay somewhat cool today.

as long as the paint matches pretty good, why bother with the rest if there is nothing wrong with it. I like that thinking too.

As for your gutters, do them yourself. Find a local wholesale siding and gutter supplier, pick out a color, give them measurements and let them deliver the gutters. I re-did the gutters on my other house a few years ago after we had a new roof put on. Fuck that was easy. I did it by myself, with the wife helping for one or two pieces. That was it. The local place delivered up to 40 foot long single pieces, so there's no seams other than the corners. Also, make sure you use the screw-in hidden gutter hangers. Fuck the nails. Super easy. Take a line level and make sure you have a slight slope towards the down spouts and you're good to go. All in all it cost me less than $400 and about a half-days labor. I did a 1600 sq ft ranch. Your biggest problem will be the tri-level. Kinda high up there. But a couple 20' ladders and a buddy and you'll be fine.

Typical.....its fucking raining now. Hasn't rained for the better part of the entire goddamn summer. I'm somewhat motivated to get this painting done and its raining.

I got the top 2 rows of siding, that are covered by the overhang of the roof. I also painted the exposed parts I had scraped off earlier this morning. The extension ladder I got was actually too tall, so I have the FIL's Little Giant telescoping ladder. Holy Shitballs! That is a cool ass ladder. Probably worth the several hundred he paid for it, but why should I shell out that coin when he will bring it over whenever I need it!

I may have to look into doing the gutters myself. Sounds like a pretty great idea. There really isn't all that much gutter work on the house, but the side by where I'm painting is pretty horrible, and plugs up, then overflows with water. But now I have an extension ladder and can easily remedy the plugged gutter syndrome now.

Well fortunately, I got the damn side of the house painted. The rain ended up being pretty light, most people would have golfed through it. Didn't soak the side of the house I was painting, so that was good. The wife seems pleased, and I'm happy to have gotten this checked off the list of shit I needed to get done before work starts back up again tomorrow.
