View Full Version : Table builders...make me a chip case?

I'm looking for a chip case to hold my cash and my tournaments sets (preferably about 2000 chips, 4 x 500 or 2 x 1000 is fine) along with a storage area for cards -- how hard is it to make this a humidor if I supply a hygrometer? -- perhaps a shallow tray for buttons, cut cards, etc. and then an integrated cash drop with a paddle slot on the top and a locking drawer. Also, I already have some chip trays made, I'd like to imitate these trays... I'd like them to be removable, and also to sit at a slight angle so the chips rest back.

I have a concept in mind. I can build a table, but I don't have the skills, the tools or the time to build a chip case.

Can anyone approximate a cost for me? Obviously a local builder would be preferred, but I won't rule anyone out because of location.

I'd say turn the project over to NASCAR Pete, but the shipping might be a bitch.
Who else does dope ass woodworking?

I like the concept. Seems simple, and functional.
2' wide, 2' tall, 18ish" deep?

what kind of wood you thinking of having it made out of?

I have like five chip trays already made, 3 rows per tray... I'd like to use these and then have more built like them... so the depth would be based on the trays, but your guesstimate sounds about right.

Eliminates the need for two birdcages, plus a cigar box for cash plus a small box for buttons, etc. plus a couple extra setups of cards nearby.

FTR, I know this will be one heavy bitch when loaded... I'm not necessarily looking for it to be mobile. I'll pull out the drawers if I need to move it. Though I have thought of having it be the top of a small cabinet which could be placed on casters... I'm not ready for that yet, though. However, I think of it as a planned expansion.

I don't think it'll take dope-ass woodworking skills, just basic cabinetry skills.

One more thought... since the cash drawer will be pretty deep (assuming its the depth of the chip trays, I'd like to have the cash drawer partitioned, with two drop slots -- one for tourney buyins and rebuys and one for cash buyins.

I love maple, but its not really a sticking point. I could go with stain-grade or even painted wood (flat black). I imagine I could do the finish myself.

JP would also be on my build list.
Kookie at times :p, but has shown some awesome work over the years.

Don't forget you'll want spanish cedar for the humidor part, at least to line it. IIRC, spanish cedar is prefered.

Or, if you're in the market for a display humi, I have one of these I can let go pretty cheap.

I don't know how practical it would be to have the whole piece double as a humidor, but it'd be fairly easy to make that top flip top storage area suitable for cigars. Spanish cedar is the most common wood for this application, but there are a few others (I believe one species of mahogany also works). You'd have to construct that area out of spanish cedar and also provide for a seal - either through something like a weather strip or a notched top that the cover sits on. If you have a bad seal, you'll lose all your humidity and your stogies will dry out in no time.

And those spring loaded circular hygrometers are only for looks, they're practically worthless for measuring Rh - go digital. ;)

Uhhh... I actually planned to store cards in the humidor part... Just wanted to keep moisture at an appropriate level... Not really a stogie smoker.

Is humidity much of a factor with plastic/pvc cards?

If it is, anyone have recomendations on temp/humitity storage levels?

room temp.
nothing drastic.

Then no real need for a humidor in a case like that then, just a drawer or such.
