My directv I've had since 2002 and been happy with it although the bill has crept up to $80 or so for 3 rooms and 2 100hr tivo/dvr's receivers. No HD at this time although hopefully it will be coming soon.

So I'm thinking of switching to Verizon FIOS tv and saving a bunch of cash, at least initially. But their DVR is somewhat small. 80 standard hours or 20 HD.

Are there better options for storage of media? We have a lot of kids shows recorded and have a lot of series we record daily, weekly. Maybe we just need to do a better job of deleting unused shows?

Also my DVD player is going bad. Maybe I should replace it with a DVD recorder to put some of those kids shows on disc? Hell there's so many options and I din't know shit about them.

Anybody have any opinions?

thanks,

I'm a big fan of the FIOS service, simply for the bandwidth / speed you get. I'm not familiar with their video packages to compare side by side with Direct. Shouldn't be that hard to do a comp. of each one, then narrow down what's important. Blazing fast pr0n downloads, or Wheel of Fortune in HD.

I should mention I already have the FIOS internet and phone. Bundling them with TV gets me some savings. I already download pron faster than my hand can stroke the keyboard. :)

I currently have DirecTV. I have FIOS for my data, and would happily go over to FiosTV, except they don't have NFL Sunday Ticket. As an Eagles fan (living in Dallas), need my weekly fix during the season. You are right though, DirecTV prices have really started to creep up.

If you do not care or subscribe to Sunday ticket, FIOS would probably be the best option out there. For the DVR, I think you could purchase your own. This would let you get an actual TIVO brand DVR. Perhaps a bit more expensive, but really good stuff (for gadget heads at least). If you stick with DTV, then you are stuck with the DTV DVRs for the most part. Buzz me later if you want to chat.

I can't really come up with a reason Dirctv > verizon. I REALLY like the Tivo receivers but that's about it. And damnit but I just got another price increase email form DTV this morning - they're pushing me away.

- I just called and set up Verizon. saving a butt load.

$105.98 + tax/mo for FIOS internet, TV and telephone for 6 months then add $20 for the remaining 6 months.

I'm paying $75 for DTV and $97.90 for a savings of 67 before the new taxes. So probably over $50/mo savings!

There's some drawbacks but not much really to make up $50 + --- this doesn't include the new price increase next month. Can't wait to call DTV to cancel to see what they want to offer to retain me. :)

I have a question about this verizon FIOS as I'm currently getting raped by my cable company.

Do you have to have a receiver for each TV you want to use, like satellite, or can you hook a TV directly to the coax outlet in the room and get the basic channels, like cable?

That's what has always kept me with cable, we have 4 SD tvs and 2 HD tvs, and getting 6 receivers for DirecTV would cost me a ton. The kids' tvs and the one in the garage only get the channels up through 100, as they don't have receivers.

FIOs requires a reciever in each room -so they they. It appears to be just like satellite in that respect.

cancelled the directv this morning.... He immediately tried to keep me by offering $10 off/month and free DVR service - $5.99 and some free extra channels. But he couldn't compete with Verizon's bundle and he knew it and gave up on me pretty quickly.
I told him I'd come back in a year if they throw me a decent "new customer" package.

You'll be more than happy with FiOS. One cool thing that might help with your media storage is the Video On Demand. They have movies/shows available on demand for just about all channels...

Kids channels: Boomerang, Cartoon Net, Disc. Kids, Disney, Nick, PBS Kids, + more. There is at least 300 kids shows/episodes that you can watch for free at any time.

They also do this for broadcast primetime shows (ABC, CBS, NBC). You can watch the last few episodes (some show the last 1 others show 5 or more) of shows like Lost, Grey's Anatomy, CSI, Survivor: Tocantis, 30 Rock, ER, Heroes, + more.

They also do it with premium subscriptions. If you subscribe to HBO you can watch about 50 different movies/events at any time for free.

So with all of these movies and shows available for free, you probably won't need to use your DVR as much.

Oh yeah, btw, the picture and sound shits all over cable.
