The best advice I can give you is go out and look at TV's. Don't worry if they are plasma or LCD.
Go out, find what you like and buy it and don't worry about it.
I prefer the shiny screen of a plasma. Others prefer the dull screen of a LCD. Go look at them and figure out which one you like.

LCD's are better with glare...a lot depends on the conditions you'll most often be viewing in...I've go the samsung LN40A650 and it is bad a...gets all sorts of rave reviews and is less expensive than the sony XBR's that it stands up against

What's with the red tint around the edge of the TV? I noticed this on a new Samsung LCD at a buddy's house the other day. Just a new style or does it serve a function?

The Samsung is in the group I was looking at last night. But it was a 780p and only a 32". I dont think the living room is quite big enough for a 40". But if the price is right and wifey isnt paying attention I might slip it into the cart.

I'm a big fan of shopping by eye versus by manufacture.
Go see what you like, then deduce which is plasma, LCD, this mfg, that mfg etc.
This exercise is even better when you go shopping for speakers and audio equipment.
You'd be surprised how many people buy shit equipment because it has a name on it.

No doubt. You can tell alot about a machine by pushing all the buttons and inspecting the fit and finish.
When the time is right for me to pull the trigger on a new TV (soon I hope), I'm going with a Pioneer Kuro plasma. If you want a superior picture, go check them out. I'm a big-time fan boy of the Kuro line, though. :D

Get your Pioneer quick. They are about ready to drop their flat panel TV division.

I heard that too. :( I just hope they sell their technology to some other company, so these displays can live on.
I'm hopefully buying one (and a BD player) here real soon.

Here's my non-expert opinion:
Plasmas are very susceptible to burn-in, so not a good choice for games, which often have certain images (the speedometer, ammo count, etc. in the corner of the screen) in the same place for a long time.
LCDs will never burn in (like a computer monitor) so they're best for games.
LCDs are not good at fast-moving images (movies, watching basketball, etc.). You will see a blur or image trail as the display tries to catch up to the data feed.
Plasmas can refresh much faster than LCD, so are best for movies and fast-moving images.

The have / are setting up deals with Sharp and Panasonic to OEM their screens / other technology.

I don't have any info/articles to back this up, other than what I've read at avsforum.com, but I think burn-in is a thing of the past w/ plasmas. There is a chance during the first break-in period, but after that, it's okay to play games for hours at a time.
Again, this is just what I've read.
EDIT: I just found this article on CNet, and it might be of some use to this thread: http://www.cnet.com/1990-7874_1-5108443-2.html?tag=rb_content;contentNav

I've found on my 50" Samsung plasma that it will burn in an image while gaming (like TW score in the left corner, the club circle in the bottom right), or if on a sports game when the score is on a bar that doesn't move. But, usually those ghosts will disappear after a commercial or two.

How old is your plasma? Fairly new?

So we picked up a 32" Vizio 1080 from Costco. Yeah I know should have went bigger but it fits the room. Along with a new DVD player and a deep freeze. A few other items and we were out the door for under a grand. Probably could have found a better price somewhere but didn't feel like shopping around. But damn if the universal remote for the cable/dvr has to be reprogrammed to control the TV. Its the little things that annoy me. Like not having the f-ing HD channels. Why the fuck didn't I think about that before buying this thing.

You should be able to program your remote for the Vizio without issue.
I've always likes the pictures of the Vizio as well. Money well spent. And at Costco, you know you got a pretty solid deal on the price. (for a walk in / retail store)

Bought it almost a year ago.

Did you break it in, and all that they suggest doing when it's brand new?

The "touch of color" on the sammy is purely cosmetic...it's very subtle and hell the tv is cool to look at even when it's off

No, and I sort of wish I would have. Like I said, it does ghost a bit, but it only lasts probably 30 seconds at most.
